Old car, very likely unused always parked on street

Hello,

Theres a vehicle on my street that hasn't moved in months. The owners have not used it as it clear from the accumulation of leaves and debris on it everywhere as well as the dirt pattern around the car suggesting that. Im ready to report the vehicle as abandoned. Im tentative to confront the neighbour because I dont want him/her to know it was me if council follow up and make them move it.

Are abandoned vehicles reported to council anonymous? is data collected by council in the form submitted online able to be seen by the owner or is kept confidential by council?

This is in Brisbane.

Thanks transport experts of Ozb.

i'd speak with your neighbour first honestly as a common courtesy.

maybe there is a legitimate reason for it being left there.

As long as it's registered and in an unrestricted parking area, council can't do anything. As long as it's not parked in a hazardous manner, police aren't going to do anything.

As said above, if it's adversely affecting you in any way (by the sound of it, you're worried about the visual impact of having dirt and leaves build up around it) it's probably best just to chat to your neighbour.

If your neighbour is a horrible person, I recommend the old bag of prawn heads in the bonnet trick.

    • This isn't always the case. Many councils have bylaws about vehicles. Mine has bylaw which state something like vehicles mustn't be parked on the roadway for more than 24 hours at a time.

I once reported a vehicle that had been in the same spot for weeks to the council. It was gone shortly after.

  • Is it parked illegally? If not, I don't believe they can remove it. The council will track the owner down and only if they can't find one will it be removed.

You can report it online but your personal details are mandatory.

The council don't take it away immediately, they slap a sticker on the windshield and give 30 days notice.

Yeah it is, but im taking the risk of retaliation.

You can check the registration of any vehicle in QLD for free…

I think you can just put "anonymous" in their web form when you report it.

Even if you do use your name, it's highly unlikely that it would ever be disclosed to a third party. Source: https://www.oic.qld.gov.au/guidelines/for-community-members/…

A rego check shows it unregistered.

The owners are a little grubby. Way too many toys for the size of their property and garage.

An unregistered car left on a public road means the council has the authority to take it away. They will probably issue the owner a warning first.

      • I wonder if you could report it to a vehicle / scrap metal service — most of them advertise that they will pay you cash for them to take abandoned vehicles away.

  • Maybe unrelated to your situation, but here is some food for though. There was a vehicle parked on my street in front of my neighbour's house one day. My neighbour went around the neighbourhood to ask if anyone owns it. No one knew anything about it, but from the contents in the car, it seemed the owner is from the other side of town. It turned out that one of my other neighbour's car was stolen the night before, so we suspect the thief might have driven the car there and "upgraded" his/her car instead. The vehicle left behind was an average car, while the car that was stolen was a sports car. Perhaps you should consider asking around the neighbourhood if you are not sure who owns the vehicle.

This is more common than you think, especially in Grand Theft Auto.

We had a similar issue on a street in Prospect (Adelaide) I used to live on - there was a ratty old Hyundai Excel parked permanently on the street (in a 2 hour parking zone) which was never moved nor ever fined (I am fairly sure despite the 2 hour parking signs, they were never enforced by the council).

It had a healthy 6 months rego on it (checkable via the Service SA EzyReg website) but the day it expired, me and my housemates raised it with the council who slapped a sticker on it and then a few weeks later towed it away. :)

  • I live in redcliffe. Some one left their 94 holden astra outside our house. It was there for 3 months. The council wouldn't touch it as it had valid registration. It looked a wreck. Front bumper hanging off. Front right wheel out of alignment. Diver window half down. Panels dented and rusty. I rang the police to report it as stolen and they rang back to say it was not stolen. Nothing I could do while it sat there. The day before the reg expired someone took it away. Pain in the ass having it parked there as visitors couldn't park there. Also it was a real POS and an eyesore.

One of my housemates left a 30yo Audi in front of my house when they went to Qld (it was a scredriver statt, no keys). As soon as it looked like it wasn't coming back, I put a sign in the window 'Free to Good Home'

It was gone the next morning

Auburn Council in Sydney sticks a big red notice on the car before taking it away.

I had a sticker slapped on mine. Called the number on the sticker and the guy goes, "Oh yeah, is that the red Commodore?". I told him it was a green Corolla. Turns out someone took the notice off the Commodore down the street and stuck it on mine.
