Upgrade (Sidegrade) to Nikon D3300 from Canon 550D?

Hi guys,

So, with the 20% off deal plus $100 cashback from Nikon, plus a bit of cashrewards action, I can basically do a direct exchange of an old Canon 550D kit to a brand new Nikon D3300.

I was wondering if anyone has any experience with the two of these?

On paper the Nikon looks better, and has basically 4 year newer technology.

But the 550D has received glowing reviews. I'm not sure if these are just because it was a fantastic camera for its time, but not so much any longer, or if it's because it just does what it does very very well.

Regardless of which body, I'd be fitting a 50mm 1.8 prime to it, which are roughly the same cost.

Any thoughts? I used to have a Nikon D5100 with a bleh lens and was happy enough with it. I just found I enjoyed the NIkon menus and system more.

Thanks in advance.

  • So you have no sunk investment in lenses already?
Most people pick a brand and live with it cause the lenses are really where the cost is.

    • Yeh I know what you mean, but not really. I bought the 550d used with 2 lenses but haven't personally invested anything.

By all accounts the new Nikon kit 18-55mm lens is pretty outstanding anyway. Think I'm going to bite the bullet

      • Yeah the differences are pretty minimal.

  • +1

Have a look at the Sony a6000 as well. Sony has a $150 discounts as well.
