Is GYM Membership for $399 for 15 Months a Good Deal?

Hi All,

I am thinking of going to gym at lunch time to improve my general health and build up resistance to flu.

Crunch in Chatswood is currently running a promotion:

$8 a week plus other fees that equates to $501.80 for first year
To break it down:

$20 Joining fee (1 time)
$1 Direct debit (every 2 weeks)
$16 (every 2 weeks)
$39.80 maintenance fee (per year)

Also I need to pre-pay $35 for the last month upfront
(That adds into joining fee)

So upfront would be around $71

Alternatively they offer me to pay $399 upfront for the first 15 months
My health insurance will cover up to $50 per year for the gym.

What do you think? Is it a good deal?

  • depends what ur into. do you get free PT sessions? do you get group fitness? You can sometimes get a free trial pass to see if you like the gym. If you have sinus problems I recommend using a 'sinus rinse' from the chemist and less caffeine!

    • need to pay per group class.

get a free pass to fitness first in Chatswood and compare.

That's a bargain. What workouts would you do to build flu resistance though?

  • If you're happy with the facilities and you'll be going regularly for at least the 15 months, then do the $399 deal.
Gyms usually give much better deals the longer you have paid in advance. i.e. you could get a better deal for 18 or 24 months.

  • There are group classes at $5 each
1 intro pt session is included

  • I think I'll be going 1-2 times a week
    15 months is very uncertain

Try going 3x a week if you can. I don't think you will see much progress with 1-2x unless you are horribly out of shape.

  • Its a good deal if you visit frequently. If you go for two weeks then its pretty expensive two weeks imo

  • legally they are not aloud to charge you upfront for more then a year? if you are in NSW because of stuff like this… when my old gym went bankrupt and people where paying like $800 upfront a few weeks before and lost there money!

that is cheap i pay $80 a month now and i check out anytime fitness and snap-fitness the minimum i can get it for is about $60 a month…

  • Very competitive & a bargain for sure.

    I pay $1,456 per year!

If you actually take advantage of it, i.e. visit a few times a week, then this is a bargain. For people who are already going to a gym, $399 upfront for 15 months is a no brainer. If you have any doubt about your long-term commitment, then perhaps pay fortnightly, even if it is a bit expensive, just to see if it works with you.

  • that not bad.. I pay $495 total for 12 months, all classes free, child care free, sauna. and its 24/7 access(staffed normal hours only).

  • You can opt for prepaid month to month for the same price and not be locked into a contract at Crunch. If you believe you'll be doing classes at least twice per week than you're better off upgrading to the $12.95 pw plan.

The first PT session is actually a consult/sales talk to get you to sign-up to PT.

If you're unsure, ask to try out for 7 days free.
