Apple MacBook Pro Power Adapter

I know its a long shot but my mum's Retina MacBook Pro charger stopped working (out of warranty) and she needs a new one. Anywhere selling them for less than $129 RRP?

  • I bought one for around $50 from kogan. Stopped working for a bit 2 months after, requested a refund/exchange they sent a new one - no questions asked. Then the 'broken' one started working again so I got 2 for the price of one

  • Try macfixit

Perhaps you should have a read of this article before buying an el-cheapo knock off charger: http://www.righto.com/2015/11/macbook-charger-teardown-surpr…

If the end has fraying/damage/burn marks you may be able to have it replaced out of warranty due to safety concerns. If this is the case give Apple a call directly.

Also, is it over 1 year but less than 2? All Apple (and any other) products are covered by 2 years of statutory warranty in Australia.

Disclaimer: not a fanboy, but there's a reason some things cost more than the knock offs.

It's less than 2, thanks for the tip.

Apple will quite often go beyond the stat warranty no questions asked. I recently had an issue with my 3 year old MBP hard drive, they replaced it even though it was well out of warranty.

      • This.

      • I should add, the hard drive wasn't faulty. It was the hard drive cable but they replaced the cable and the hard drive and installed yosemite. They were under no obligation to do this for a 3 year old product.

  • Do NOT buy a knockoff from eBay or similar…

Buy a genuine apple one from a apple reseller or apple store.

The reason for this is basically for your safety as others have said.

The other thing to do is to book a genius bar appointment at the apple store and you might get the broken one swapped out for free. Technically you(or your mum) would have a 2 year warranty on it.

Is the broken one frayed or physical damaged? What exactly happened to it?

    • I know, I know… It was weird, she tried to print something and there was a bang followed by a burnt smell coming from the printer. Must have short circuited the charger through the power board, since the laptop itself is fine. I'll book a genius bar appointment but will probably end up getting one from Macfixit.

      • Verify the macfixit one is genuine Australian stock….

If it isn't and something else goes wrong and the laptop is damaged the warranty will be void.
