TV Retune Causes Much Worse Reception for ABC & SBS

Hi everyone.

Last night, while eagerly waiting for Doctor Who to start, I remembered that channel 9 had a new HD channel, so I thought I'd retune the TV to pick it up. I ended up getting quite a few new channels we didn't have before, but disaster struck: all ABC and SBS channels are now very bad reception. Screen tearing, audio glitches, etc. It's unwatchable.

I retuned it twice more, including doing a scan for just digital channels, and one for digital and analogue, and it's making no difference. The reception was fine before, but now it's terrible. (On the other hand, the cricket looked pretty good on 9 HD.)

What can I do? I regret retuning it and it seems there's no way to revert. When I went into manual tuning, there was no option there to change existing tuned channels, even under manual settings. I don't think it's the cable because the exact same cable was working well five minutes earlier.

A few details: I live in an apartment block in Flemington Vic, close to the city. All channels look good now except for the ABC and SBS channels (including Food Network, ABC2, etc.). My TV model is Samsung UA40EH5006MXXY. I changed ISP from MyNetFone (an Optus reseller) to TPG lately but all of this should make no difference, as it's ADSL, and the TV continued to have good reception after changing.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Internet searches all refer to the digital changeover two years ago, or other unrelated issues.

I haven't retuned mine but I will go downstairs and do it now and report back… But a few things to try.

    • Try unplugging the power on the TV for 5 minutes and reconnecting it.

    • If you have a spare cable try that .

    • Is there a factory settings reset option on your TV? Again I have a very similar TV so I'll see if I can work it out and edit this comment. But if you can find it do a factory reset.

    • If you happen to know your neighbours knock on their door and ask if they have had any issues.

Try retuning early in the morning when the temperature is cool (or at night if it's a clear, cold night)
Plug and replug the antenna cable from wall and from TV to re-fresh the electrical contact points.
Try retuning while physically touching the cable (using your body as an antenna) ideally touching a metal point on the cable.
Get up on the roof and ensure the antenna is pointing at the transmission towers, gently straighten any elements that appear bent out of shape and while you're up there ensure that the antenna cable is properly connected.

  • Thanks you two. I got home late last night but will try this tonight when I get home.
