Listed Car for Sale on Carsales Website and Received Sus Enquiry from Buyer

Hi fellow OzBargainers,

I listed my car for sale on carsales website last night. This morning I got a SMS from a perspective buyer asking me to email him the offer price (which is already stated in my ad). I emailed him and got the following reply from him straight away:

"Thanks for the swift response…I am OK with the asking price.due to the nature of my job and location…i will not be able to come for inspection,am a very busy type as i work long hours everyday,i have gone through your advertisement and i am satisfied with it.As for the payment..i will be paying you via the fastest and secure way to pay online(PayPal).I have a private courier agent that will come for the pick up after the payment have been made …so no shipping included. You can now send me your PayPal email so i can pay in right away and also include your address in your reply. If you don't have a paypal account, you can easily set up one…log on to www.paypal.com.au and sign up.all i really need from you is the exact details.Kindly delete the posting as am definitely buying it from you and it would be sad for me to make the payment only to be informed of the its sale.
Thanks."

Have you dealt with buyers like this? Is it legit? Sounds a bit sus to me.

Appreciate your feedback.

    It's a scam.

Google "I am OK with the asking price.due to the nature of my job and location"

I could give you further info but I'm working on an oil rig at the moment and later having cochlear implants at hospital.

  • Tell him your not willing to open a PayPal account…see what happens.

  • It is a very common scam.
Reply that you will only take cash/bank cheque.
    Or just ignore it.

  • Definite scam. Leave well alone.

  • Ignore it, don't even engage.

Delete email and block email address 100% scammer.

  • This warrants an immediate delete. Some people must actually fall for this for them to keep doing it.

why does he need the car if he is so busy? its a scam, people will pay using paypal and then dispute.

although you could file a police complaint later on, but it is not worth the hassle.

  • Don't do it. Not worth remediating afterwards. Out of interest what car are you selling?

    • I am selling a Holden Barina Spark.

  • You can pay on PayPal with a paypal cheque with a stolen credit card or similar. The funds are then retrieved by PayPal and leaves you out of pocket.

Ask them to pay with paypal and have cops ready for the courier.

String him along for as long as possible, acting innocent.

I do this with the 'Microsoft' calls helping me with the 'virus' on my computer. It's hilarious. One guy totally flipped on me and started calling me a (profanity).

  • you can report scammers on the accc website.

    https://www.scamwatch.gov.au/report-a-scam

  • I wonder if the scammers send out one of of their own as the "private courier agent"? Get some bikies waiting…

  • 100% scam. Police won't do anything as there is no proof of no intent to pay. Ignore it.

  • Can someone explain, what does the scammer hope to get out of it?

Are they going to use the guys home address + paypal and try to use his identity? Or something else?

  • get them to send the money via MoneyGram or WesternUnion, see what they say. Then just cash it and scam them
