  • I have one question for you..
    How is this a bargain?

    • +1

It's 100 free points, something that would take $500 worth of groceries to accumulate. Flybuys points are redeemable for a number of things including getting Coles Myers vouchers which can be used at Coles, Officeworks,Kmart, etc.

    • +7

      Agreed

Going by the $20 Flybuys gift card, 100 Flybuys points = 80c
      https://www.flybuys.com.au/flybuys/content/information/splas…

Is your time and effort worth 80c? :P

      • +4

        I completely agree with this.

One of the great things about these point schemes (for the marketers) is that people forget how much a point is worth.

If someone came on here offering 80c off of a product, they would cop a lot of abuse for wasting peoples time.

imo everyone who is into points should have a spreadsheet that calculates how much a point is worth, and what percentage back you are getting on each transaction you make. Eg by above, if 100 points takes $500 worth of groceries to accumulate and is worth 80c, then for every $500 you spend you are getting 80c back, or 16c per $100 spent or 0.16% of your spend at coles.

This is compared to my westpac altitude amex, which earns 1.8% back of everything that I buy with it, or my westpac altitude visa, which earns 0.6% back of everything that I buy with it - a big difference.

        • +1

Agree partly but I do my grocery shopping at Coles, my homeware shopping at KMart, and my office supply shopping at Officeworks. Flybuys is a free card and they will ask you for your Flybuys card every time you check out so if you are using the stores then you may as well use your Flybuys card.

Sure, $.80 off a product is seemingly not much. But this is just $.80, no purchase necessary. It's more akin to finding $1 on the floor. Very little time and effort spent on either.

@muzzamo, Westpac Amex sounds good. Do you get it back in cashback or giftcards? I'm just a bit apprehensive with AMEX as many stores charge high surcharges when using them.

          • @neil: I've been getting them back in myer gift cards because I'm too stingey/lazy to spend money on my own clothes so getting myer gift cards forces me to go clothes shopping :-)

In regards to Amex, you would be suprised how many places take it without surcharge. All supermarkets and petrol stations, and many household bills, all medical bills - dentist, private health insurance, physio, all vets that I have been to. Most major retailers with the exception of JB hifi. Harvey norman accept it. Pretty much any major retailer that isn't on razor thin margins - MSY do not accept it without surcharge, neither do spend less shoes :-) . Many small retailers do not accept it without surcharge.

I'm getting the WBC altitude platinum with no annual fee, but if you can't negotiate a no-annual fee one (most people that get it fee free do so because they owe the bank lots of money or have lots deposited) then you need to work out how much you think you will get back each year, and subtract the annual fee from that to see if you are still ahead.

Also the WBC and commonwealth ones are known as companion cards, which means you get both a visa and an amex both linked to the same account, and its up to you which one you use at any given time. So for places with a surcharge, you can use visa.

The card also gives you an extra 2 years extended warranty on anything you buy with it (most platinum/gold cards only come with 1 year). I've managed to rack up some serious points recently by doing tech purchases for friends and family - its a win win, I buy their $4000 tv with my card and they get a free two years warranty plus my advice when shopping and negotiating with salesmen, and I get 1.8% of $4000 = $72 worth of points :-)

            • @muzzamo: The annual fee on the Westpac Platinum is $295, how do you figure "no annual fee"?

Ah. So you owe the bank a lot of money and the $295 fee is waived, otherwise your 1.8% return is reduced heaps by a whopping big $295 annual fee!

              • @busterau:

                • Pretty much. But owing a lot of money to the bank is fairly common :-) I'm neither and have a fee free staff account.
            • @muzzamo: this is another tips for me.
if you got friend that workplace has employee benefit and the provider is API.
You can ask your friend bought the gift card for you.
I bought my gift card from API for coles, woolies, dicksmith, etc for 5% discount for the value of the card.
so for $100 gift card, I only pay $95 only.
Then I purchased using my citi platinum card, which give me points.
Then I only purchase items on sale only, always check your supermarket brochures.
When the supermarket do their sale, their price most of the time are cheaper than the normal shop. REMEMBER, I am not saying all the sale price will be lower than normal store price.
When I purchase on the supermarket, I try to make it up to $30, which is give me discount 4 cent on my petrol and make sure bring your membership program as well on the check out.

              Summaries
              1. I got point from my credit card by purchasing my gift card.
              2. I got 5% discount by purchasing this gift card from my employee benefit.
              3. I got cheaper price coz, I only buy items on sale.
              4. I got points from my flybuy / woolworth membership card.
              5. I got 4 cent discount for my petrol buy purchasing item that total value $30 with my supermarket
              6. I only buy my petrol on Wednesday, coz this is the cheapest petrol price of the week and using discount docket to get 4 cent discount
              7. I pay using my cc and use my loyalty card again to get another point.

At the end, all of these are free points for me. And I am not paying a cent on my annual fee, coz the bank happy I use their card all the time, so they always waive the annual fee for me.

          • +1

@neil: Note: Flybuys is no longer valid at officeworks.

      • -1

I'm glad that this got posted as it gives a chance to single out what a total scam the FLYBUYS program is. I'm into loyalty programs and signed up when this began. However I soon threw away my card because the "rewards" are so miserable. This program gives loyalty programs a bad name and I'm reminded of that fact every time I get asked for my FlyBuys card. It is a façade of a loyalty program - purely designed to collect data on customer purchasing practices.

I doubt this would be a bargain if they offered 1000 points - but 100 points is ridiculous! Glad OP brought this scam up for discussion. Very close to a neg vote - but not quite.

Suggestions please as to the best response to give at the check-out when asked if you have a FlyBuys card - feedback will get back up the chain:
"I would if they weren't worthless."

        • No. That feedback doesn't get up the chain at all. When people tell us that at the checkout, it just annoys us. Like we don't have anything better to do than b**ch to our supervisors about your annoyances? Yeah right. We have a job to do. And if you're too lazy to complain to the RIGHT people (and not a random worker) yourself, you're not worth serving.

          • @CryssieJade: Thanks CJ - interesting to hear the view from the inside. I'd name this as a training fault if the key front of house staff aren't being encouraged to, nor being given systems through which they can easily, pass on direct customer feedback back up the management chain. For most customers this contact is over 95% of our interpersonal contact with Coles. From your final phrase I'm delighted to hear you're finding your work to be so enjoyable and personally rewarding. NEXT…

            • +1

@Charlotta: Ah, but we do pass on relevant information. If it's feedback, either positive or negative, about our store or customer service, we pass it on. Feedback about a rewards program? I don't think so.

    It's a freebie, free 100 points is good =)

    Thanks

  • Oh okay fair enough.
I thought you had to pay to sign up to the site.

    • Ok, I've edited the title and added for free. Yeah, lasoo is free, flybuys is free.

  • Just got my 100 points. Thanks for this!

  • how do you know if they've given you the 100 free points?

FlyBuys bonus points collected from this promotion will appear in qualifying members’ accounts approximately four weeks after signing up.

For some reason I thought my Frequent Flyer that I got with my Everyday Rewards Card was a PlyBuys card :\ I have signed up at www.flybuys.com.au and should get a card soon so I can take advantage of this offer.

You could also put a link to flybuys for those like me who didn't have one :)

    Thanks neil

    • Heh, I just assumed everyone had one. It's the first right of passage to an Ozbargainer. Anyway, added link to description. Thanks rl.

  • just tried this, waiting 4 my point… thanks

  • i signed up hopefully ill get points. "its says qualifying members’ accounts approximately four weeks after signing up. " i wonder if Additional Cardholders with a different home address can also sign up and get your flybuys account another 100 points ?

    • If its the same card number, it won't work..

    • +1

Alison from Lasoo here - there are 100 points available for each FlyBuys member number. Unfortunately, additional card holders all linked to the one account will only receive a maximum of 100 points.

  • Well I am not a fan of flybuy&coles, I got only one $20 gift card during last four years, and all other points expired. Anyhow this is free, and I check lasoo some time, and I do gather flybuy points when I remember, so +1 from me.

  • +2

isn't 100 fly buy points equal to $250 at Coles since every $5=2 points? still a great deal though!

    • Ah yes, my bad math skills show up again.

    • +1

If you paid with Coles Source Mastercard $250 would get you 200 points ($5 = 4 points). http://www.source.com.au/MasterCard/

Plus why not buy gift cards with a Coles Source Mastercard and then use gift cards to pay for yr shopping and collect Fly Buys points again - triple dipping - then $5 = 6 points.

You could also do the gift card thing with WW everday money credit card with everyday rewards / qantas FF.

      • Good tip, abc. Yes this sounds like the way to top up your points for FlyBuy and Everyday rewards!

        • Damn. I think Coles have already got this covered…

          http://www.giftcards.com.au/commonquestions/buying.asp#4

Can I collect FlyBuys points when I buy a gift card?

No, the recipient of the gift card can collect FlyBuys points (and any applicable bonus points) when they use their gift card at participating FlyBuys retailers.

  • Cool, every little bit counts towards my FlyBuys. An impossible scheme to earn much without spending copious dollars, but every bit helps.

  • +1

As the first 2 replies say, 80c? Why all the fuss?

I was very disappointed when my wife brought out one of these cards at the checkout today. I avoid Coles/Woolworths as much as possible. I can often pay 1/2, 1/3, 1/4, 1/5 or even 1/6 of their prices elsewhere for comparable products.

Those cards are there to encourage people to spend more and shop more often in their stores. And they give you so little back in return for your 'loyalty.'

    • Yeh I agree - people place WAY too much importance on rewards points. People prefer to shop at Coles etc to gain points without realising that they are getting a mere 0.16% discount.

    • tips. you might get bargain if you just purchase the products on sale. example laundry powder, last weeks or 2 weeks ago, woolworth or coles has sale for 1/2 kg = $1.89
tell me which shop that selling that price?

if you saw a bargain like this, what you need to do is buy more.

i agree with you their normal price are expensive. but their discounted price is really cheap too.

  • A little off topic guys but I figured where else better to ask! I'm new to credit cards and normally pay everything upfront in cash. I'm considering getting a coles credit card and linking it with my flybuys for the double points (we spend a lot at coles!). 2 questions:

    1. if i pay everything off within the 62 day interest free period, does that mean i could potentially use the credit card without ever paying any fees?
    2. if i link my flybuys with the card, will it incur any fees? some forums say yes but the website says "No annual fees"
    • +1

If you pay the closing balance by the due date then there will be no interest fees. If the card says no annual fees then you will have no annual fees. Most credit cards will favor the user and you can actually make money if you pay on time. Check out http://www.ozbargain.com.au/wiki/credit_card_rewards_compari…

      • I dont see the Coles CC listed on there? (it really isnt marketed much anymore - apart from the 8c off fuel offer).

But yeah you can make money one way by paying with a CC (using someone elses money) and then obtaining interest from your own bank account b4 you pay the supplier of your CC :)

      • thanks for that informative post neil. could you explain to me how the "annual rewards" are calculated?

  • Thanks, I've got my 100 points!
