Used Car max. KM

Wanting to buy a used car and just wondering what is the maximum kilometres used you would look for in a car?

  • Depends on budget and the car, for me 80,000 klms. although I did buy one recently that had just over 150,000 and it drove perfectly.

The thing to remember the more klm's the more servicing it will require.

Are you still looking at an 86? perhaps looking at Honda type r's could be a good cheaper option

Looking into an 86 but the interior is awful, it doesn't appeal to me.

      • me neither, but its the drive thats fun

I don't see mileage as being a problem as long as it is reflected in the price and the servicing has followed specification.
That said, I suppose around 400,000km is getting toward the life of most petrol engines (not most diesel though).

    • My 95 Hilux diesel just rolled over 300,000km and isn't showing any signs of slowing down (did the timing belt etc at 300k)

      • Good info, thanks.

I'm sorry but this question needs more than just that to it.

As others have said it depends on so many things. The car make, model, whether it is a petrol or diesel, whether the timing belt has been done if applicable, whether the high kms are country highway kms

A car lets say a Land Cruiser that has spent it's life travelling between say Melbourne and Mildura several times a month and has been properly serviced every scheduled time and has over 300,000 kms will likely be completely fine.

A car someone has thrashed the crap out of at 300,000 kms will probably not be fine.

You're better off finding some cars that you like and are in budget and then asking "What will need doing on these cars at xxx kms " (Where xxx is the number of kms)

    • Say it was a BMW, a sedan or coupe

      • Say it was a BMW, a sedan or coupe

Again it depends on the model and year. How has it been driven? Who has owned it? Has it been maintained properly and being serviced at decent places or just serviced at Kmart auto because whoever bought it couldn't really afford it and bought it for the badge.

In GENERAL with BMWs it is best to buy the higher end ones i.e a 325i not a 320i

How would you distinguish between higher end ones and lower end ones?

@cr7: Seriously dude, google is there for a reason, that is a pretty rudimentary question.

        • @cr7: As I said you'd be better off going for higher end models like the 325i not a 320i.

Same with other models go for a 530i instead of a 530i

If you still can't work out how to distinguish the 1st number is the model, the second 2 refer to the engine size

        • @knick007: 530i instead of a 520i is what I meant…

        • sent you a message man

  • depend on how much the budget is and how long you intend to keep/drive the car?

  • W124's get over 1 million MILES from them

  • do not buy a low end bmw

proper, top end are worth the money

cheap german cars are a money pit

  • I'd think well under 100,000kms for an average build sdn.
At 200,000km cars are just not fresh and crisp any more.

Also, I read toyota's great reliability drops off to just average (statistically) around 100,000kms, particularly the motors.

  • How much am I paying for this used car? Under $1k as long as it starts, up to 10k probably up to 200000km, up to $25k under 150,000. More than $25k under 100,000.

I did buy my current forester for $8k with 197,000 on it. The price reflected that it needed the 200,000 service soon.

  • My LPG car is 640,000Km and still going ok. Bought it two years ago.
