Please Help Find a Smart Phone

Hi Everyone,

My iPhone is on its way out and I don't think I want to replace it with another one. I am on a pay as you go plan with Optus. I am looking to purchase anunlocked smartphone outright or take out a contract that comes with a phone and unlimited everything.

Have you seen any good deals? If you have a Nokia Lumia phone how do you find it? I have been looking at the 1020 model and the reviews are good. There is so much available on the market, please help :).

  • Nokia Lumia 950 or 950XL kgo or an LG G4 if you want a cheaper phone.

IF you're gonna go for a Windows phone, take the time to learn how to use it properly and don't be a computer illiterate bell-end and complain about it.

    • Please note that not all apps have a windows version. Android and iOS are the most commonly available versions for any app. Windows isn't that common.

im looking too, havent researched much, but my opinion of apple products isnt good, the os is updated every 6 months and renders a phone useless after 2 years… guess thats the plan…

i was going to try a nexus 5 i heard they r good… but then again might be just as bad…

my iphone 4 is 3 years old and hardly functions… cos the os has rooted it

the os is updated every 6 months and renders a phone useless after 2 years

If you believe this sheeeet, then I wouldn't employ you as a researcher or advisor

      1. IOS 9 the current version is available on an iphone 4s which was introduced in Oct 2011 (4 years old)
      2. You believe that when a new OS is introduced then a phone automatically dies sometime later

If you believe 2 then almost any phone from any manufacturer is useless, which is crap.

cos the os has rooted it

As for your iphone4 you can reinstall the software easily. The latest operational OS is still available for download 7.1.2

If that doesnt fix it, then its not the OS that is the issue.

As I mentioned above all phones be they MS/Android/ IOS/blackberry based, get soiftware updates and all at some point are not available for older phones.

In the IOS world at least you can update the iOS when new software is released, vs many of the android phones (except google ones) which have to wait until the supplier customises the version, or you get a 3rd party hack.

Now there are other legitimate reasons for changing your phone OS like, cost, features etc

        Apple sheep. baaaaaaaahh

Obviously being ironic 'cause anybody older than 6 wouldn't make that comment in earnest.

I'm not here to bash Apple, but that tactic is an Apple exploit - they know their customers want the newest shiniest versions of things. Just look at their adverts - saw the iPad Pro ad the other day and LMAO (I bet their customers didn't even realise they needed an XL iPad until they saw the ad and went: Hell yeah! I wanna use my iPad outside to look at the stars so I need the XL version!).

Having said that, their tactic clearly works and has made them one of the most powerful tech companies in the world today. Respect.

        • your spot on
a man recorded himself showing ppl the iphone 3, stating it was the new model and ppl lost their mind at how awesome it was…

      • Gee halfdollar, why dont you read what I said.

As I said, his desire to change is a legitimate enough reason, just his stated reason that I called out was wrong.

New OS versions dont render old phones useless.

If you think carefully, if they didnt introduce a new version, the old phone would still be working.

Now if you want the new features, then yes you will need to upgrade.

When ANY company doesnt introduce new features then people will say they are falling behind.

That goes for ALL phones and ALL OS's , and Cars and Appliances etc

WFT - get off the rock rocky… you make no sense…

        • Thanks for the newbie advice.

Would be nice if you at least made sense with a little explanation, if you are capable… :)

This is a site for sharing, even if the sharing might not be what some want to hear or are willing to accept.

But share something that helps and generic comments like you make arent really sharing,

rockyracoon just goodgle the amount of people who have problems…

    https://www.google.com.au/#q=iphone+4+useless+ios+7

    i have version 7 and its cactus…

fortunately ill never need you to employ me as a researcher, but keen to know your arguements…

i personally love apple, they have paid my income for 6 years now… i get out of bed when ever i like, stink of b.o. smoke at my desk, and drink wine… i dont think u would want me working for you

    • I looked at your Google links, most are two years old (2013)

And Google any OS and version and you see complaints.

Even your link shwos IOS 9 complaints

BTW taking your google link and the first found page, I read this at the bottom of the article

UPDATE: A quick workaround has been discovered by reader "Samsamsamsam" and it appears everyone is reporting positive results with his solution to the iPhone 4/iOS 7 lag.

The first versions of IOS7 had issues. The latest version is 7.1.2

Googling that you find people saying they want to move from OS8 to 7.1.2

So Google can find anything for you.

And nothing tells you that you MUST upgrade a phone. Its a personal choice to get extra features.

A friend still runs an Android with Gingerbread and is happy with that, doesnt need or doesnt want to upgrade as it does what they want.

      • ok your correct, iphone 4s which are just 2/3 years old function just like the day they were bought…. the new o/s hasnt slowed them down….which i didnt need to upgrade, even thow half the apps require it…and apple maps is awesome

i only bought 5 and 6 for work, but i dont understand ppl spending 1k + a year, to replace there phones…

but not my problem but you said what i said was rubbish, guess u know all to criticise comments straight up…

        • for the record

my phone app loses contacts often
          sms apps loses texts
if the phone goes flat the pin screen doesnt work, need to reboot it
several apps are dead cant be clicked but wont dissappear
i have 7.1.2 and it is slow as hell

i bet if ppl had to replace their tvs, fridges, washing machines every 2 years they would complain but young kids froth at replacing their phones every new model which is every 6 months….

fam spme dude showed ppl in la the iphone 3 and said was the new iphone and ppl blew their load over it….

  • and of course its the o/s its the only thing that changed…. its the life cycle of software and hardware..except apples is a little too aggresive..
check number of threads / memory been used by new o/s and why its hangs the old phones

    My opinion is:
    a) Work out what you want the smart phone to do.
    b) Look up as many reviews as you can online to get a feel for what is out there.
    c) Have a good look around on what the pricing is for the various phones and the plans out there.
    d) Work out if you want to buy outright or on a plan.
    e) Go to something like a Telstra or Optus shop to get a hands on with the phone to make sure it fits the bill.
    f) Buy whatever is the most appropriate.
    g) Live with buyer regret 3 months later because the phone you really want has just been released.

Best of Luck with the search.

    • g) Live with buyer regret 3 months later because the phone you really want has just been released or the exact same phone you bought 3 months ago has halved in price and comes with bonus phone case, screen protector, 100GB mobile data for 1 year, selfie stick, and a free set of Japanese knives, all with free postage. If only you waited juuuuuust a little longer.

Is there any must have apps on the iphone? It would be good to check if Android or Windows has them.

    • I actually haven't downloaded very many apps. I use whatsapp and Viber a lot so these two apps are a must :).

Optus Alcatel Pixi 4.5 for lite usage (due to 1GB RAM) for $69, Moto G 3rd Gen otherwise for ~$350.

This topic as ever, is always hotly addressed.

One thing missed is resale value.

I have done very well with Apple products in this regard.

I wait for the 10-15% sales on new but discontinuing lines (like iPad Mini 2 at the moment) I go for the sales and buy within 30days of leaving the country. I get the GST back resulting in up to 25% off list.

I keep the device for 12-18months and sell s/h and that's where Apple products shine so much brighter than any other. No other brand or line has the resale value of Apple. Usually I sell for 15% less than I bought for (which means the buyer gets -25% -15% off the original price which because it was a run out line it's already ANOTHER 10-15% below the original offered price when it was first introduced. You get my drift: the buyer gets a really good deal, I don't loose much money on resale and I'm usually always in warranty.

I could go on about Apple as hardware/Opsys/software quality control vs "others" but that is well covered elsewhere.

Apple does have better resale value but can cost a lot more.

Note sure when there has been 10-15% off iphones lately, if ever. If buy phones on sales An LG G4(grey import) can be had for almost half the price of an iphone.

I totally agree Ozhunter. Apple products are indeed costlier - like BMWs (which also follow a similar high-entry cost but similarly have great resale value) but phones for most are more affordable than same!

If you do the total cost of ownership, it comes out better than with Andriod or Windows regardless of the entry cost.

Yes you do have to have the dough to buy firstly and cannot get the same benefit I described by buying on a phone plan.

Suggest the op does the total cost of ownership and considers available entry capital call before deciding.
