Any Good Deals on Flights for December 11-13?

Hi,

Got some last minute leave approved from work but cannot think of anywhere to go for the weekend of December 11-13. If there are any suggestions on deals or ideas for somewhere in Australia I can go with the girlfriend that would be great.

Thanks Ozbargainers!

  • Departing from Sydney?

    • Yes departing from Sydney.

  • road trip?

    • I'd prefer flying somewhere but don't mind driving either

Fly to Melbourne, then pickup relocation camper to Sydney, drive the coast road back

    • Hey RockyRaccoon,

Thanks for the idea but unfortunately hiring these cars requires a 10 day booking period and I've only got 3 days leave.

      Thanks anyway!

        May need to look again.

I think you are confusing the 10 day window for pickup and delivery with the 3 days maximum that you can use it for.

So if you pick up on the 11th you need to have it there by the 13th

(or if you picked it up on the 9th you need to have it back on the 11th)

My US friends are taking a van from Sydney to Brisbane tomorrow and that is also for 3 days (2 nights), then flying back after their stay in Brissie (actually its 3 nights 4 days as they paid for an extra day)

        • Ah ok. Sorry i read into incorrectly. I called them though and they informed me that it had been already taken but thank you again for the idea. Will keep it in mind for the next trip!

@aabphil01: Hey sometimes things dont work out for a reason. As you said there's always next time and maybe at a not so busy time on the roads.

  • Also, sometimes you can just to show up at the airport and see if they can fit you on a plane at "standby rates" (seat would otherwise be empty if they didn't just flog it off to someone there), also some with car rental places (eg: If they have a vehicle that needs to get back to another state) you can negotiate a pretty good deal.

No guarantees and even harder during peak, but you can try though. Just go to the airport with hand luggage only and a passport and see where you go.

    • Hey The Land Of Smeg,

Sounds like a good idea! Might pitch it to the misssus and see if she wants to be a little adventurous.

      Thanks again!

I wouldnt try this as standby fares went the way of the dodo 10 to 20 years ago. And this was mainly in the US not here.

You might find last minute fares actually cost more.

        many articles on this

google - standby fares do they exist australia

        e.g.

There is no last-minute cheap travel in Australia
Cheap last-minute travel is a myth. There are no tricks. If you do manage to secure a cheap last-second flight, it’s due to luck. In Australia, as we don’t have the option to fly standby or manipulate mystery flights, the more time you have to plan a trip, the more time you’ll have to grab a bargain.

        • It does exist for Virgin Australia employees.

        • @inherentchoice: Correct, also employees friends and family. I know I got stuck in LA after the pilot decided freight was more important than "family"
