Camcorder or Action cam??

I have a LG G3 but I don't find the video quality satisfactory. When I play them on computer it's very grainy. I need the camera to record my 2 month old's activities. I want to record her walking, running in good quality as they will be for future memories. I don't to spend too much though. At the moment I am looking at these ones:

Camcorder:
Sony HDRCX405 Full HD Flash Handycam http://www.thegoodguys.com.au/sony-hdrcx405-full-hd-flash-ha… $254
Panasonic HC-V160GN Camcorder https://www.jbhifi.com.au/cameras/video-cameras/panasonic/pa… $249

Action cam:
Sony HDRAS20 Full HD Action Camcorder https://www.jbhifi.com.au/cameras/video-cameras/sony/sony-hd… $199

Thanks in advance for your help.

  • Sounds odd..
    Is it too dark?
Have you removed the plastic film off the lens?

    • Yes I took the film off. The video quality is fine on small screen but it becomes worse when I play it on big screens.

    Filming your two-month old: camcorder.

Sticking a camera ON your two-month old: Action Cam.

Action cams have fixed wide-angle lens with a pronounced fish-eye effect, which is great for set-and-forget filming the world around the camera.
But for filming your kid, you want to be able to zoom and focus and adjust various settings.

  • Do you own a camera (not your phone)? Most cameras, even ones a few years old, will take better photos and videos than phones (although maybe not in 1080p if it's a few years old). Consider getting a better camera and then you can take photos of your child as well.

I bought a video camera for our wedding and took it on holidays a couple of times. When I bought an SLR I found that it had equal/better video quality and since I always take my camera places, I never had a use for the video cam. The video camera has only been used once in the last four years.

    • I do have a DSLR but it's too chunky to carry it around to record. I am mostly looking to record her movement when she starts to walk and run. So, a lighter camera would be better.

The best camera is the camera you have with you..
Something is wrong with your phone, it should be perfectly fine for video. The G3 has one of the best phone cameras around even compared to more recent flagships phones.
Is the video quality setting turned down?

  • I have the Panasonic V770 so this may or may not be of some help.
The startup is quite slow. So in the case of catching that "first time" shot, I'd suggest you have it connected to a battery backup and leave it on when you're around. I've missed a few moments of my grandson because of the delay, even though I've had it on hand. The V770 is excellent. Very easy to snap a photo while you're taking video too, or vice-versa. It has the same physical setup as the Panasonic you're looking at so it'll be easy too.

As has been mentioned, the G3 has an awesome camera. I had one until I smashed the screen (this phone lived a very short life). Maybe it was low light, wrong auto white balance or zoomed.
