Basically I just want to be able to rent movies from Xbox Video or Movies & TV, whatever they're calling it now. Any ideas which one I need to get because it appears as if I can use either.

Yeah can't see why not. It will just come of your Microsoft account credit which will show up on the confirm screen with the current balance. I use for dlc and digital games buy I'm sure movies will work as well. I got 2 $100 cards a little while back when the ms store had 25% off. So $200 credit for $150 bucks. Not bad considering I only really buy stuff on special or deal of the week.
I only bought the window store ones cause they were on sale not the ms live ones.
U can definitely use a windows store gift card on your Xbox. I bought a couple on their last sale and redeemed on my Xbox one. It adds credit to your ms account.
