I've always thought the cheap Tontine pillows weren't the best quality or the most comfortable, so I've tried various ones out at Myer and David Jones and hoped there was a sale on their vastly overpriced pillow brands (40% off seems to be the norm.)
Any tips for buying online / getting ones that are just right?
did a search for you on past threads on memory pillows.
bought 3 memory pillows for $30 each from one of the earlier deals. supposedly RRP $100. Good ones keep the shape and fits to head better.
My personal preference is to buy when cheap instead of when needed.

One thing I did learnt is that if you buy online, in particular memory pillow (as expensive), do not trust the photos, make sure you check the measurements and prefer to trust only the one with brand. Some XYZ memory pillows are thin and small (ie cheap) and smell fantastic recycled rubber.
Sheridan always has decent sales join their email list. They sell from their warehouse direct to the public. They are expensive but well worth it.
Target pillows?
The wife got these from Ikea as our "show" pillows on our bed. They are surprising not bad. And so far, the foam has flattened yet, like you get with Target/Big W/Kmart pillows.

My current pillow is memory foam pillow with a normal foam outer layer cover. I am used to that pillow already.
My GF's father is a chiropractor and we got hold of some waterbase Chiroflow pillows and will never from now on will not go back to another pillow.
Not cheap but whats a good nights sleep worth!
Try a latex pillow. They tend to be comfortable and you'll probably feel less ripped off if you get it on sale. Myer or Pillow Talk sales seems to be the go but if you can find it online cheaper … then the lower is the go'er.
edit: Have you tried sleeping without a pillow? Did me a world of good.
