Retirement Gift - Mid-Range Android Phone with Good Camera for < $500

Hi,
I'm looking at buying a mid-range Android Phone with a good camera for <$500. This will be a present for my dad who has recently retired. He will now be embarking a phase of traveling to new places and taking lots of photos (with a lot of selfies!).

I looked at the Oppo N1 mini and I like how the camera can be rotated for taking selfies as well. Sadly, the device I purchased suffered from a few issues and I returned it to the store.

Can you help suggest a good phone?

Thanks!

I bought the LG G4 for 450 AUD. And I would not say that is a mid range phone. Replaceable battery, SD card, very good camera (back one anyway, not sure about the front one as I am not a selfie guy). For 50 AUD I bought tempered glass, back cover with wireless charging, a wireless charger and some NFC tags( just to find out you have to unlock the phone to scan tags, pff). Android 6 is coming (already available in the EU).

    • If you're rooted, try to install Xposed and NFC lockscreen enabler.

      • Thank you, I will go to EU soon, update it there to Android 6 and try these.

        • It may not assist, but worth a try.
On KitKat (CM11), it worked perfectly for me.
I set up an NFC Tag to unlock and wake from sleep.
But now on Marshmallow, It detects the tag but doesn't actually perform the actions set.\
This is for my LG Optimus G.

  • Oppo R7 Huawei P8 both on sale at Dickies.
OnePlusOne on sale tomorrow at JD.com

All tick the boxes with plenty of budget to spare.

LG G4 as above is probably the best option.

    • He's on Vodafone and looking at the comments in the deal, DSE seem to be selling the L00 version.
