Looking for a graphic tablet - opinions please...

Hi all,

I'm looking for:
* entry-level tablet, ideally below $120
* pen only, I don't need the touch function
* for personal use (simple pictures/ light photoshop editing) - not for uni and I'm not a graphic designer

From research, I've seen the following
- Wacom Graphire4 (old model - I think): 512 pen pressure lvl for $50
- Wacom Bamboo Pen: 512 pen pressure lvl for $99
- a generic brand tablet with 1024 pen pressure lvl for $99

How important are pen pressure lvls in practicality? Any recommendations on the above/ others?

Thanks in advance :)

  • I received a Medion (from Aldi) graphics tablet for Christmas a few years ago. It has been very disappointing. Although it has 512 pressure levels on paper, you would never know in practice. The mouse cursor jitters all over the screen even when the pen is held still.

    The number of pressure levels is far less important than how smoothly the device transitions between them. I've heard good things about wacom tablets, but I've never used one.

  • i have a wacom intuos 4 small got for $169 as a reseller

  • Yer Wacom are a really good brand. I would recommend the Graphire 4 over the Bamboo, One because its cheaper and that's always a bonus. And it should be slightly better quality than the bamboo, as the Graphire and Intuos range of Wacoms have been around for years. Where as the Bamboo range has only been out for about 12 months or so. It still probably a very good tablet, but it is aimed at what you are looking for. Light photoshopping and small graphic design. Where as the Graphire range is more of the entry level professional range of graphics tablets.
    AFAIK the range goes from Entry level to Prfessional.
    Bamboo, Grpahire, Intuos and then Cintique

  • Thanks for all the comments. I've bought the Wacom Graphire4, which was delivered today. Very happy with what I got. My cousin has a similar generic brand tablet, sligthly bigger, about the same price. There's a HUGE difference in quality and responsiveness of the pen. The work area is a bit small, but not a problem at all. Glad I bought the wacom.
