Advise Needed for <~ $600 TV for Patient Confined to Bed Mostly. Brisbane Area

Have known this younger woman since she was 2. She has progressive neurological disease (HD) which is deteriorating rapidly and will soon have to spend much more time in bed.
I live in Melbourne and she is in Brighton, Queensland.
Her quality of life is important so I would like to buy her a largish TV with DVD built in as she loves music and Abba. The TV will have to be fixed to wall.
Has anyone any suggestions and recommendations as to best place to buy in Brisbane? Have read that I have missed out on DSE specials. Sad. Only had case conference on Friday and have found there are some stores within 10 to 12 kms radius of Brighton. Many thanks for your advice on suitable model and retailer. JoyV

    Evening Joyvee,

I was saddened to hear of your friends deteriorating condition and I hope that regardless of which tv you end up getting it will provide her countless hours of entertainment.

As you did not specify a size etc, one could get a high quality tv thats small or a cheaper lower quality tv that's large. You'll need to decide the balance and importance — distance of tv from bed will determine size in a way… the further away the tv, the bigger the picture can be.

I did about a year and a half ago buy a Viano from DSE (32" full Hd) for $200 and the picture for the price is amazing…. sound is not perfect but overall pleased with purchase, low price doesn't always mean low quality.

I noticed you said with a dvd built in - while I think integrated is all good and well, I see it as another point of failure, and if that fails you have to replace/service the whole tv… As DVD units are dirt cheap, I don't think there is any cost saving in having it integrated and other than savings made in less cables/clutter.

Will your friend be changing the discs herself btw? .. If she is, you could look at a HDMI wireless transmitter (like the Belkin), she could have the DVD/Bluray player next to her bed on a bed stand with the transmitter connected, and then the tv being 3-5 meters away (or even more) with the receiver connected to it, saving her having to walk to it.

I would suggest look into onsite warranty/service as a key factor - I think hisense do onsite repairs or used to - if anything goes wrong with the TV should be a case of picking up the phone, and within a day or two a tech is out — on whirlpool you read stories of people waiting weeks for repairs…

Do you happen to have a time frame in which to purchase? this site is one of the best for tv bargains to be posted and from what I've read many people are waiting for boxing day sales so fingers crossed.

    Regards

  • Sorry to hear of your friend's circumstances OP. I have had a Viano prevoiusly and was not impressed, particularly the sound. The DSE employee also mentioned their high return rate in the manager AMA on OzB. I think there are plenty of brands that would be better for 600 but as digitalaxon points out the size is a factor. I would also steer away from integrated dvd where possiblebe for the same reasons. My sister has requested I find her a TV about half an hour ago, so I will keep an eye out in my travels for anything of particularly good value Joyvee.

  • Sorry to hear that, it sounds like a bad situation for the poor girl. Ive recently been looking in that budget range for a TV and found this Kogan one thats in your budget

    579 - https://www.kogan.com/au/buy/kogan-43-agora-4k-smart-led-tv-…

Its got everything really, with the smart capability you can stream netflix and youtube stuff like that, check out some other other tv's on there too and look for VESA mountable in the description for attaching to walls

this is another good option too https://www.kogan.com/au/buy/kogan-43-agora-smart-led-tv-ful…

  • Thank you for your helpful comments. Unfortunately my friend no longer has enough co ordination to manage any aspect of changing DVD and will rely on others to change channel. Think bigger would be best.
Maybe I will wait for boxing day sales. Liked idea of service from Hisense as medical staff will need technical help. Think I will only need 12 months warranty although others may get to use it later.
