Thoughts on Android phones $200-300

Hey all,

My awesome daughter has just come out as the top student in her final year of primary school, and so I'd like to reward her with a decent smartphone for High School next year (well, Christmas really).
I was initially looking at the Moto E for around $200. But I have since decided that minimum specs are 2Gb RAM and 16Gb storage, and HD screen, so have upped the budget to up to $300. She also wants a white flip-cover, so accessories would need to be available.

Any thoughts on what fits the bill, that I can get in my hand before Christmas?

Theres someone selling new sealed Galaxy S4's on Gumtree for $279, which seems a good deal, but advise on whether this is a known con or similar would be good!

Dick Smith also has the Oppo Mirror 5s which looks good for around $250 - anyone have experiences with it?

Cheers!

  • The S4 is a very old phone now, I wouldn't pay that much money for it.

The Lenovo K3 Note, and the Redmi Note are popular Chinese phones in that price range. The problem is that you may not get one to Australia in time for Christmas unless you pay for an express courier. Most of the cheap places will send the cheapest post.

I have had an Asus Zenfone 6 for 18 months now and it's been ok. The biggest problems were related to the Intel processor, but those are getting resolved. Lenovo are sneaking more and more ads into their stock apps now as well - which is annoying. Overall it's been pretty good considering it was ~$250 when I bought it.

  • Thanks!

The Oppo Mirror 5s is currently only $209 at DSE…specs look very good for the $….

  • I wouldl get her a white s4. Still a great phone with lots of aftermarket acessories cheap. Whilst there are cheaper/better Chinese knock offs which may have better specs the s4 is definitely quality and reliable. Amoled screens > lcd

    • lcd is still somehow better than amoled, there's just something off looking about the amoled ones, especially pre S6.

  • The Moto G 2nd gen is on special for $139 at Dick Smith

    • Would have been perfect, but I missed out on that one - checked both Emporium and Bourke St Melb. earlier today.

  • So much great old flagships, such as the htc one m7 or even m8. You could get the LG G2 and G3 for under $300, the 10% off everything on eBay will tonight here the one m7 for click and collect.

    $270

  • I ended up getting the Oppo Mirror 5s for $209. Specs were just the best for the price (2Gb RAM, 16Gb storage, SD card up to 128Gb).
It certainly doesn't feel cheap, and looks really nice - I'll put it through it's paces shortly…
