Cost of labour to remove old engine and install new engine

hi all,
I'm after the rough cost of labour to remove old engine and install new engine.

I have the new engine ready but old engine needs to be removed and new one installed.

  • Putting the engine in is not that hard, maybe 3hr? But the tricky part is getting the old ECU to accept the new engine i think. Because odometer differences and all that. Why not shop around and ask for quotes?

Why would you buy new engine without knowing the cost of putting it in? It could be roughly the same price as the new engine.

    What brand is your car?

  • What engine?

    If European more $$$

  • +1

Depends a lot on the car and type of engine..

    • exactly

Front wheel drive generally more complex = more cost.

  • If it's an old vehicle, it'll hands down be cheaper to replace the vehicle than repair it.

  • If its a straight swap then its not hard, usually around 2-3hrs with the right tools (engine crane and hoist) and a few mates (moral support/abuse)

If youre in melb then shoot me a PM. we have a small private garage and do this stuff on a regular basis. anything we make goes back into the rent :)

    • Hey I'm a complete noob on engine swaps and I had a question. For example if I had a Golf R MK6 and wanted to engine swap with an AMG C63s or a Nissan GTR R35 would that be possible? If so, how much do you think would it cost or is the swap hard do you know? From Melbs too:)

      • Epic grave dig.

A 2-3 hour swap is only like for like. Ie same engine type.

What you are wanting will cost mega bucks because t isn’t a straight swap and all sorts of extra stuff will be required.

You are a complete noob, start smaller.

That’s not saying it can’t be done, but the engine first needs to actually fit in the engine bay, then needs to match all the ancillaries.

Ohh Cheers! Ahaha yeahh I am a complete noob well just wanted to learn a bit. So could something like Audi S3 hatch work better?

      • Lmao mate I hope you are having a laugh. You wanna put an engine with three times the capacity and double the cylinders in a Golf?

        Not possible.

You can only swap stuff that a) fits and b) is relatively similar in structure, otherwise you'll be looking at literally months of custom fabrication to make it work.

        • Nah I'm just a bit slow mate ahah. Cheers for the info tho

        • Not possible.

Anything is possible with a big enough wallet!

  • Like above , Really depends what car and year!

Last time i did it I went from 12A to Ported 13B rotary in an 1979 Rx7.Minimal wiring drove it to the exhaust shop the next day.

and then 3 years of driving after that.

well it really depends on the swap? its not just the engine! usually every thing needs to come out of the engine bay and then reinstalled in the right place and you will also want to change all belts and oil and what not on the new engine!

  • what kind of car are we talking?

is it an identical engine swap?

  • The frustration started with the first word.

Ok, lets all assume everything here, arrhhh, with GST that will be $1234.00 plus allow for this that and the other, but not if this happens. If the car is red, allow extra for the coffee, and the delivery day must be ending in Y or add 10%. If you need a Hooldle-stamp the cost could blow out, and the guarentee on this price is flexible to not include a rainy day.
    We hope that helps.

By the way, I did an engine change …oh hang on I have done hundreds, and the price varied from a few hundred to a few thousand pending a million factors.

It is fun day, is it not?

  • OP - is your username an indication? 8-12 hours R&R plus whatever fluid it might happen to lose during the swap and add more labour to replace those lost fluid? Plus whatever else you want to get it done while an engine is out of the car? How long is a piece of string?
