Hiding iOS deals?

Hi Ozb community/mods,

i don't own an apple iPhone, never have, never will and have no interest in the constant 'deals' posted for them!
Between not being able to hide specific tags, and every ios app deal linking direct to their specific apple store and not the generic itunes.apple.com (that i can then hide); is there a way can this be achieved?

If not, can the mods introduce tag hiding or parent site hiding?

There's an interesting post about that here

    • That's got nothing to do with hiding ios deals.

        Do Pandas eat caterpillars ?

  • Find an iOS deal, then click on the "Hide" link at the bottom of the deal. You will be given an option to hide deals from the "user" or from the "store". In your case you want to select "store - iTunes Store". Then you'll no longer see any iTunes related deals.

I did this for the uDemy crap that was polluting OzBargain.

    • I think he just wants to hide ios deals and not osx.

  • That's my exact point, when hiding from a deal every one of the stores is the apps individual store, not all of iTunes / ios apps.
For example, if you look at the drop-kick cvas's link; and try to hide store you're given: 'Hide deals from store storytoys-entertainment-limited'

    • I've been meaning to bring this up as well. The help document specifically mentions this as something that can be done but it doesn't work as all deals are associated with the store within iTunes not the iTunes store itself.

  • Previously you could hide the itunes.apple.com deals. However recently we have been deriving individual stores from iTunes so it becomes not possible to hide all App Store entries.

It would be something we'll fix next year.

You couldn't do anything to hide deals if they had a certain tag? Then if it's tagged with ios it could be hidden that way.

Just a short term workaround :)

Thanks Scotty, I look forward to it!

  • So it's been a week and every 2nd deal seems to be ios related; how's the improvement going?? :D

    • It would be something we'll fix next year.

I'm sure he has more on his plate than just fixing that problem.

      • Yeah. And it's only January :)

The fix is actually not that hard. For deals that have derived stores, when you click on "Hide" link, it gives you choice to

        • Hide deals from store (in this case iTunes sub-ID)
        • Hide deals from user

Just need to add another option "Hide deals from URL-derived store" which would be itunes.apple.com.

Obviously it's going to be a bit taxing on the database and our DB is already struggling — something that we will need to work on this year to fix up the database backend.

  • Just an update for this issue. You should now be able to go to an existing Apple App Store deal, click on Hide icon and then click on the checkbox to hide all iTunes Store deals. This will remove all the iTunes Store deals from your New Deals and Front Page deals page.

  • Ah Scotty, you are a web god amongst men; nice work!
