Car roof has a few rust spots, any quick fixes? (pic inside)

I recently began hand washing my car and I've noticed these spots began appearing, with rust in the centre. Should I keep washing my car or will it take it worse? And are there any quick fixes for these kind of blemishes?

Thanks

    deal with it immediately.
are you DIY or need a pro?
how old is the car - ie, are you willing to do a quick and dirty job on it?

if DIY, seek help from a friend who may have experience, otherwise:
    1) scratch/sand away as much of the rust as possible.
    2) apply rust converter
    3) paint over (prime and paint, possibly paint twice)

rust is your enemy. youtube is your friend.

if you can't find time to do the above for a while, apply a dab of something that will seal the rust temporarily - could be paint or even nailpolish. rust is porous and will be sucking in as much water as it can.

    • Hi, thanks for your reply. I wouldn't mind spending some money to get it fixed, and it's a 2007 Mazda sp23 with 100,000+km on it but I really like the car and it's my first car so I'd like to keep it for a few more years.

How much do you think it'll cost for those small spots?

Apply rust converter gently with a tooth pick, wash off and dry completely, buy small spray paint cans (primer and colour) and spray a 'puddle' onto some cardboard and apply with a tooth pick, until you fill each hole. Go very steady, little bit at a time.

These look rather small and look very much to be on the surface only, if you want to fix, follow driver33b's advice.

    But some things to consider

    1. Are you close to the sea. If so this is a greater issue, as salt will cause it to corrode faster. If you are inland eg Penrith etc, then the issue may not be that great
    2. How old is the car, and what value is it.
    3. How long do you intend to keep it.

when you know this and if you dont want to do it yourself, go to a body repair shop and have them assess it. Tell them how long you intend to keep the car, it may not be worth doing

My first choice is to buy a bottle of rust converter (Superchauto sell it), and just dab with artist brush. Next day wipe off wet or dry with clean cloth.
Then dab on a colour-matched touchup acrylic paint from maybe ebay, Superchauto or repco.
Put on a 2nd coat if you want. Wait several weeks then clean and wax car once or more times a year to seal out water.

This is a cheap, reasonable level of diy car mantenance.

I just restored a 30 old coaster bus with large silver tape runs all over (took photos) covering many 4 to 5 inch rusted gaps (Pine needles on roof did much of it). Took about 3 days and looks great.

Otherwise just wax twice a year (3m hard paste wax from aliexpress is ok), and it wll slow it down.

What is the car and age?

    • Hi, it's a mazda 2007 sp23. I don't really trust my own abilities in fixing this and I'd prefer if I had it resolved professionally. Any idea what the cost will be, even just an estimate?
