[VIC] Free 3 Year Driver License Rewarded for a Good Driving Record (Under 25's with Probationary License)

586

Free Licence Scheme

The free licence scheme rewards young drivers who maintain a good driving record while on their probationary licence. If you've maintained a good driving record on your Ps, you may be eligible to apply for a free 3 year driver licence. Find out more below.

Am I eligible for a free licence?

You’re eligible for a free 3 year licence if:

  • you'll be under 25 when your probationary licence expires
  • you’ve had a Victorian probationary licence for 4 years (with a P1 for 12 months and P2 for 3 years)
  • you have a clean driving record (you haven’t incurred any traffic related offences while on your Ps)

You may still be eligible to apply if your licence was suspended due to:

  • medical reasons
  • a Fines Victoria (External link) licence suspension
  • a court conviction for a non-driving related offence (i.e. Community Sentencing Reform).

For more information, call 13 11 71

How do I apply for a free licence?

Check that your postal address on our records is up to date. When you’re due to graduate to your full licence, we’ll send you a free 3 year licence renewal application form in the mail.

The easiest way to confirm your personal details are correct is by logging into your myVicRoads account and submitting the Free licence application form.

    It's ageist!

    • +4

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old

      • +15

        Lest we pay full price

    • Just like all lazy taxes these days, you are penalised for being a long-term customer. No love for the older safer drivers. There's just no incentive for me to drive safely any longer…

      • +5

No incentive? How about staying alive? Is that not incentive enough?

    • total crock. been driving 20 years, no offenses. no rebate for me. plus a full license is 10 year upfront.

  • +3

This hit-and-run incentive program seems age discriminatory.

WA has 1 free year only.

  • -7

This happens automatically when they send you a renewal. It's not really a bargain… It's normal price if you meet the criteria.

    • +3

It is a bargain if you meet the eligibility criteria for good driving behaviour..

You physically have to drive safely if that makes it better..

  • +22

I was happy when I received a letter for discount on license renewal. The next letter I opened was for a rego renewal. The increase in rego renewal was more than the discount I received on the license.

Give with one hand, take with the next.

    • yep, to take full advantage of this, drive someone else's car (legally & with their permission of course ;)

  • -2

Just got my renewal… due January. .. and its ~$76… hmmmmm.

I'm SO sure my record is clean for that period. Worth a phonecall.

    • +1

The scheme begins Feb 1 2016

      • +1

Sorry… I re-read, to find its (also) P Platers only.

        • -1

And now I get 3 neg votes?

Title has since been changed, info updated.

          Merry Christmas, indeed.

  • +2

While I commend the scheme, I suggest that this should be considered a targeted offer.

    • +6

It's targeted, but not an offer. It's a public service announcement.

If you qualify, your next license renewal bill will read $0. Like it or not.

      • +4

Exactly, it doesn't require you doing anything and is automatically given to everyone who meets the criteria. Not a bargain

        • +3

It requires you to follow road rules, which everyone doesn't do

        • +2

Not really. Pretty much only requires you not to get fined. See people all the time doing stupid shit and breaking road rules. Hardly ever see them being pulled over.

        • +4

@51ngh: don't you mean "it requires you not to be caught disobeying the road rules"

  • +2

Interesting… saw the title and thought great timing!; unfortunately can't seem to find any discount schemes for Vic drivers that are over 26 years.

    • They had it for a while for all ages but I knew when they brought it in that it would be discontinued before I was due for renewal.
25 years with no points taken and counting…

      • No points given ;)

        They're demerit points.

        • No offence given! :p

  • +4

I'm sorry, an ongoing scheme that has been operating for numerous years is not a deal.

    • -4

Get off your high horse. I see deals post here all the time that repeat. Bitdefender is one. Never had to buy a license over the past 2 years because of re-advertised deals. No one gets uptight over that !

      • +1

        Bitdefnder is periodic not ongoing

  • What a nice initiative, wouldn't work in WA - http://www.abc.net.au/news/2015-12-21/western-australia-defi…

    • +3

You get one free year in WA now.

      Probably not next year though.

    • How can this be when they have a liberal government in WA, it must be someone elses fault…..

  • -4

VicRoads is just pranking you because they know everyone in Victoria is a shitty driver.

    • +7

Hahaha coming from someone who lives in Sydney. Why don't you honk your horn more, it makes traffic go faster.

  • +3

A discount isn't new. Used to apply to anyone. Only found out that they dropped it when I got my last renewal. Would have been the first time I actually qualified to. Needless to say, I've started speeding again.

The reason they dropped it for everyone was apparently it was costing them too much money since half of the people on the road qualified.
    http://www.heraldsun.com.au/news/victoria/vicroads-scraps-li…
Safe drivers? No way I'd describe close to half of drivers as safe. More to driving safely than just not getting speeding fines.

    • -1

wow, i thought i still got this.
i am 29 and never had a driving infringement.

if anything it should be free if you're a good driver.
and why is vic road complaining about losing too much money. they are a service to the community not here to make as much money as possible.
they should be taxing the police and their revenue cameras, surely there would be enough money to share with vic roads and especially when the police are using their roads to make money…
instead we are the ones that get stung!!

    • -3

Opposition Leader Daniel Andrews said the government’s decision to cut the program was “tricky”, “mean” and “shortsighted”.

He's had a year to bring it back. Guess his union mates aren't too good at sticking to the limit…

      • -2

He's too busy cleaning up the mess from the secretive deals the Liberals left behind.

  • +19

so this is really only an information piece, its not a bargain, as there is nothing anyone needs to do to get it other than have a clean license for 3 years.

Now if you had a 3 year clear license and then you needed to apply for it, then that would mean letting people know about it would help.

If we say this is a bargain, then posting that stopping smoking, our drinking coke, is a bargain as it saves money and saves lives…..

    Just my 2½ cents

    Move it to the forums

  • +3

OP, I appreciate the effort you've put in to the post but it really does belong in the forums. It's not really a deal.

  • +5

Up voting because it's handy information to know, sure it's targeted and not applicable to all, but it's dissemination shouldn't be hindered by trivial opinions and squabbles, there are similar posts here on ozbargain

  • +10

Also, if you follow the road rules you also will be exempt from receiving any fines/infringement notices. Save between $40-$3000. What a bargain…

  • +1

"Good driving record" pfft, most people drive like idiots, just because they haven't been caught for speeding doesn't mean they are a good driver.

  • +1

This is not a bargain, it should be in the forums.

  • +1

Not a deal, merely informative, should be posted in forums.

    • There are a plethora of posts like this that go unnegged, even though they're informative, e.g. the most recent Plex deal. Why not neg them too?

      • Partly because I don't have a ps4 or xbox. Didn't click the deal.

  • +3

Save $105 when you pay for a parking ticket of $6.total saving $99. Wish someone posted that before I forgot to buy a ticket.

The 25 peyote who up voted this "deal" are just going around negging everyone that disputes it.

    • +3

The people who down voted this "deal" are just going around up-voting everyone that disputes it.

      No more peyote for you!

  • +3

    How about this bargain..

Save $100 by not speeding and getting a speeding infringement.
Is basically the same criteria and reward

    • +2

      No thought at all.

A standard req fee for your license is removed. Speeding fines aren't similar in any way.

      • -3

        Yes its very similar

You speed when you on probation then you get a fine and you also have to pay a fee for your license
You speed when your a normal driver and you still get a fine.

Basically not speeding saves you money. Still not a bargain..

  • You guys got it cheap in Victoria $76 for 3 years…Just paid $122 in Qld for 3 years.

    • They make there money when Vic drivers get booked doing 1km/h over the speed limit.

      • +1

And if you don't drive but use Public Transport instead then they beat you up if you don't have a valid Myki.

      • 3 KM or more ;)

It sucks, but quite simple… don't speed.

  • +3

And i thought my free 1 year in WA was good

    • i remember having to sit down after i read that letter, such was the excitement lol

      • One of my friends got it, then assumed he didnt have to do anything for the free year. Got pulled over a while later and got fined for driving without a licence for 6 months.

        • damn. sucks about your friend :( iirc, i think you still had to send in your renewal form but without payment.

        • @tdw: yep, you had to tell them if you wanted 1 free year, or 5 for the price of 4

  • -2

I call such offers for what they are … ageist and bulls#!t

My blood boils when I see places offering free meals or free fruit for kids. If you have the brats pay for their food.

Why should single / childless couples subsidize families who already are doing it well with government benefits, rebates and taxes!

  • +3

Why do you all care so much if its in deals or forums? OCD? Way to discourage future posting.
Let it go.. Let it go..

  • That's a good deal but should be nationwide and all ages
