Dungeon Crawl Placed Into Voluntary Administration

I recently contacted them about returning a game for a refund and this was their reply:

"Thanks for your email.

Thank you for the information - we have now located your order information.

Dungeon Crawl has been placed in Voluntary Administration and is pending restructure.

We cannot process any refunds or accept any returns. "

So basically if you got something that you wanted to return they have already ran off with your money. RIP.

Pretty sure we all knew this was coming.

Their statement about not holding stock over slow period in January made about as little business sense as giving their stock away for free.

    • I can't even return my game for a refund now, I somewhat feel scammed.

      • ACCC and join the list of creditors hoping to get money back from another failing business I guess? Not much more you can do about it. Credit Card/Paypal chargeback perhaps?

        • Yup I went crying to paypal, see if that sorts anything out. Glad I didn't spend more money with them!

        • +3

@watty: A couple of years ago a VPS service (ie. Hosted server space) went under and claimed they couldn't process refunds. Fortunately I paid by paypal, raised a dispute, and got my money back.

'Their statement about not holding stock over slow period in January made about as little business sense as giving their stock away for free.'

Agreed. Hard month as we had hundreds of questions and little answers ourselves…

  • What game? And why did you want to return it?

    • Persona 4 xbox 360, rep said it came with day one goodies (I collect day one edition games sometimes) and it didn't in the end. Happy to send back no issues on my end.

  • Time to lodge PayPal dispute

    • +1

Yup I did and got a prompt refund after they said they won't be doing any.

      • @watty:
Was the refund for Persona 4 xbox 360?
and did you sent back the game?

I'm still waiting for my copy to turn up, I hope it does come with Teddie.

      • +3

        @watty:

Just got the game, it's the UK ver. means no Teddie Bop Bag and Tarot cards. :(

        The description lied!

        • I didn't send back the game as they didn't say anything to me other than the email I've posted above (would have been happy to if they cover the postage cost). I contacted the rep before buying the game about the bag and cards and he said it came with it so yeah…

        • @watty:
I don't think I'm gonna bother emailing them about it, but still disappointed.

        • @astroberryz: I know how you feel, I was over the moon to get a collectors piece for $10 but in the end it was pretty disappointing. Honestly, we still kind of win in the end, the game goes for about $20(ish) dollars elsewhere.

        • +2

          @watty:
I'm letting it slide since the rep were so active at the time, and I also got my game from winning an auction of theirs.

    • Be patient, your games will probably turn up. 2 out of 3 of mine have so far

      • 2 of my 3 orders turned up but they're the wrong game

        • Oh no! Now i'm a tiny bit worried about my other game :(
          What games did you get?

        • +1

@rukia: Well for example Euro Truck Simulator 2 Gold was actually the older version without '2'. Covers significantly different.

    • Why? They're still sending items and replying to emails today.

  • Pretty easy to check ACN. shows company is under "APPOINTMENT OF AN ADMINISTRATOR" since December 04 2015.

    https://insolvencynotices.asic.gov.au/browsesearch-notices/n…

    • Are they allowed to trade, like over the weekend saw?

      • Yes.

A business can continue to trade whilst the administrators decide to restructure and return control to a board, or decide to sell or liquidate.

If, however, they were trading whilst insolvent, that's a different matter. I severely doubt that's the case though. The weekends sales would have just been a small cash grab/inventory reduction to help the position of the company as a whole.

        • I pre-ordered Mighty 9. Should I lodge a dispute now or wait until February 2016 when it's supposed to be released?

        • +1

          @Donatello:

I doubt at this point you would receive anything. Generally, all owed monies/goods pre-administration are put put aside, and the entitled becomes an unsecured creditor.

I'm far from an expert on this (only know because my workplace is currently in administration :s), but I would probably wait until the resolution.

        • @IHateFrasierCrane:
Although their recent fire sale on the weekend, should have sent alarm bells, I'm going to lodge a Paypal dispute / chargeback :(

        • At the discretion of the administrator it can trade, sure. If they are still accepting orders I assume they are still trading.

We saw the associated user above state restructure which is one option, a DOCA is another or they go into liquidation.

Whoever said that they're taking your money and running though is wrong- those proceeds won't go to the directors anyway.

As for insolvent trading…. That's for the liquidators to establish and strike up against the directors. The point of a VA is to protect directors from insolvent trading claims as they are stopping before they get to that point.

  • i wonder why they were selling games little cheaper than usual. I bought few in last week from them and was pretty happy with service.

  • So stupid, they were selling a ton of games… wonder why they have problems???

    • +5

Imports have become far more expensive, local retailers being very competitive (new releases $69 or less).

      • +2

The two other shops owned by the parent company of DC are also in the same circumstance, so I'll assume its because of those shops and not DC.

        • +5

Honestly even we don't know what caused it. But as Shot said, DC was owned by a parent company that owned two other eCommerce retail stores. Whatever issues caused this, it went beyond just DC.

    • +69

Hahah yes, 10-15 people being unemployed just prior to Christmas is hilarious! You should write jokes for Christmas Crackers.

      • +14

While I'm super disappointed over losing one of my favourite stores my disappointment is nothing compared to the headache caused by losing your job over Christmas.

I wish you all the best and hope you all get back on your feet asap.

        • +4

Thanks mate - it's definitely a terrible situation for all involved. We truly appreciate the kid words. Merry Christmas to you :)

        • @DungeonCrawl: It is indeed terrible. All the best in finding a new job mate. For now enjoy your christmas holidays.

Now there's no DC, are there anymore local online game shops?, not inc. EB.

    Gamehead was long gone.

    • gumtree.

    • +6

There's the Gamesmen. But i've can't think of more than a couple good deals from them in the last few months.

      • +3

Gamesmen are a good bunch. Definitely an independent to get behind - plus the effort they went to for Fallout 4 was inspired!

slow clap We're so glad to hear that the sudden unemployment status for 10-15 employees brings you so much happiness.

  • +1

My copy of Assassins Creed Unity came today. Was pretty quick postage actually.

  • +2

I bought a $20 PS4 game. I live in Sydney (they're based in VIC) and they sent it via an overnight courier and it arrived today. The option I chose was the free delivery option. Whyyyyy would they waste money like that?

    • That's nice of them.

They still owe me a Teddie bop bag and Tarot cards though.

        • +2

WHY WOULD YOU KICK SOMETHING AS CUTE AS THAT!! D:

      • Apparently the cards are of pretty bad quality, ebay sells the whole set for about $7 (whereas the pack only has half).

    • +2

…well that explains the Voluntary Administration…:P Glad it arrived!

  • +1

wow. I've been on OB for a few years now and i'm sure that like everyone else, I've missed out on a fair few deals. So I guess I was due for a win in that I caught the DungeonCrawl 25% off sale early and that my three games all turned up today.

  • +5

That's a real shame, they were one of the few Australian game stores left. I've had a fair few dealings with them in the past, never an issue, they were always great.

    Hey guys,

First apologies for being so quiet - obviously with everything going on here, I have been a tad distracted. (Skeleton Crew - literally been helping warehouse post everything the last few days. Kid you not, we shipped approx 1K - 2K min orders a day, between 4 people…)

I can confirm we are in Voluntary Administration as Watty has pointed out. It's a terrible and shitty event for everyone involved (Staff, Creditors, Customers) and we are truly sorry for all the trouble it has/may cause you. It's not how any of us here thought our DC story would end, and it's certainly not the way we wanted 2015 to end personally.

A lot of you have questions and rightly so - this post is to address the ones we can answer, and to point you in the direction of whom to contact for the questions we cannot answer. If there are questions we don't answer please do not think we are ignoring you or hiding anything. Simply put - we either don't know the answer, or we don't want to answer anything that may be contradicted later by the Administration. They are, after all calling the shots now.

    "Where are all your listings?"

These have been pulled by us - primarily as a means of temporarily ceasing trade, and so we could get every order completed. Pre orders were pulled just after the 4th December to avoid taking any additional orders for titles coming out in 2016.

"What is happening with my order?"

If we could complete it, it has been shipped - either with Australia Post Standard Letter Service or Hunter Express. (No tracking = Standard, Tracking = Hunter).

If we oversold on an order, or if part of the order we could not ship because a product was oversold, we have cancelled and refunded the purchase. About 80% of these have been completed, the rest are being done today.

Apologies for the brutal tone of 'Sold out. Here is a refund'. We are on as skeleton crew at the moment, and our time is limited so our priority has been refunding first, notifying later (We figure better for customers to have the money back!).

"What if my order does not arrive?"

If Australia Post Std Orders have not arrived after 14 days from dispatch, you will need to contact the Administrators. Their details are:

Email: [email protected] or mail to:

    de Vries Tayeh
    PO Box 218
    Parramatta
    NSW 2124

For Hunter Orders (and some eParcel Orders) - Contact Hunter first, as they may be able to assist in locating the package. (They have a pretty good tracking system, so you will be able to know straight way if something has gone wrong). Their number is: 13 22 52 (http://www.hunterexpress.com.au/home).

If they cannot locate the item, or confirm it is lost, then you will need to contact the Administrators.

"What if I want to return an unwanted item? What if I have a faulty item? What if it was the wrong item received?"

You will need to contact the Administrators for more info about this. Details under 'What if my order does not arrive?'.

PS Apologies to Watty for the missing Persona items - this was legitimately a mistake and our system said it should have had the cards and teddy bag. Truly sorry about that one mate - glad you could get the refund via PayPal and hopefully you can still enjoy the game/on sell for a profit ;)

"I have so many questions! Give me answers!"

Completely understandable - send them to the Administrators. As of COB today, all staff will have finished here (including this Rep :S). There may be one of two customer service guys left, but ultimately you are best emailing the administration directly as they will be able to give you the best and most accurate information.

"Woah - I pre ordered a few things that are coming out next year - what's the deal with that?"

I know that Ozbargain went nuts on Mighty No 9 - again you will need to contact the Administrators. I honestly wish I could be more help on this, but again, don't want to state anything/promise anything that would be contracted.

    'What will happen to DC?'

No idea - hopefully someone will pick up the IP and re open up in the new year. If someone does, please give them a chance as they obviously will be an entirely new and different team to us, and will have had no part in the business before this.

I hope this helps guys - again apologies for not being able to be more specific. No guarantees anyone will be monitoring the DC Rep account here, so any questions best to email.

All the best in 2016 - and thank you for the support you provided us with in the past :)

    • Former DC Rep.
    • +1

      Thanks for the info.

Why can't you just refund our pre-orders for 2016 (eg Mighty no 9) ?

      • +9

Likely because that's not how voluntary administration works. That cash is now theirs and you are a minor creditor.

        • +1

This - it's also something we just honestly don't know the answer to. Again, not ignoring questions, just don't want to give customer inaccurate info.

        • +2

@DungeonCrawl: If you knew there was a chance you'd go into administration, you really shouldn't have taken any preorders. It's really shitty to tell people who've given their money and have no item, just contact administrators. It's not looking good for them.

    • +3

Thanks for coming on here and answering questions. Must be a rough time for you and I hope you and the rest of the DC employees find a new job very soon.

Hope you try and have a good Christmas.

      • +2

Thanks mate - Merry Christmas to yo-ALL HAIL THE HYPNOTOAD!!!!!

(But seriously - sentiment and compassion is greatly appreciated. Thank you :))

    • +3

another local store bits the dust, a very sad way to end esp during Christmas.
how long has DC being around ? 10years?

      • +1

        Since 01-Dec 2002.

          http://www.dungeoncrawl.com.au/t-faq.aspx#about

The Dungeon Crawl story started back in 2004

        • +2

@McFly: Ha well that is odd - ebay store has starting date of Since 01-Dec 2002. I'm probably wrong - wouldn't be surprised if it was created 2002, but not utilised until 2004. Either way - before this ol rep started here!

    • +4

Mate, I feel for you and your team. I know how it feels like for you and your team especially just before christmas. Wish you good luck to find another job very soon.

      • +1

Thanks mate - thank you for the luck and Merry Christmas to you :)

    • +1

Best of luck in the future :)

      • +1

Thank you - apologies again for the issues with the Euro Truck games. Was purely a stuff up, which is still no excuse. (It's surprising easy to miss '2' on stuff..)

    • +2

To all at DC - as someone going through the exact situation at my workplace at the moment, I feel your pain. It sucks. Something beyond your control screwing you over. Like you guys, i'm hoping someone will pick us up and I still have a job. Now though, i'm in limbo.

Love what you guys have done over the years, and hope that we can see a positive resolution in 2016.

Merry Christmas to you all. Make sure your staff remember to (try) put this out of their minds and enjoy the Christmas holiday.

I hope in both our situations, it's a positive 2016.

      Cheers guys.

    • Can you clarify how this happened. Ie to thin markups. Competition. ? If your shipping 1-2k a day min is it really that cut throat?

  • +2

Damn, I purchased several board games from their eBay store last few weeks and all of them got delivered in perfect condition.

    Sad to see them go.

    • +2

Thanks mate - enjoy the games!

  • +1

Sorry to hear about the outcome for you there. The game I ordered last week arrived very swiftly, especially given the circumstances that you were sending them out under.

  • +2

I managed to get all my items today except they sent the wrong game for one of them, not sure what sort of resolution I can get from them… :/

    • +2

Send a paypal dispute and you will get your refund while keeping your game for free.

  • +3

This is terrible news, 2 days before christmas. DC staff have always been super amazing, and it was a one-of-a-kind store in Melbourne.

Still recall them handing out free posters of new games 6-7 years ago when I first visited the store. You will be missed. Best of luck.

  • Reverse the charge on your credit card with your bank & it's all good. All it takes is a 5min phone call.

  • Purchased an item and got charged twice by Paypal although only one order got through. Have contacted them twice with no response so far, now I know why. Guess Paypal dispute it is then.

  • +1

sigh - ordered & paid for some games over the weekend, so looks like I have to raise a paypal dispute?

    • no, only if you don't receive. Scummy move to dispute while receiving your items.

      • +1

cheers - received 1 out of 3, sent them an email this morning and the standard / auto response email was received.

so looks like I have to dispute the other 2

        • +1

can't you wait for couple days??? gezzz

        • I'm still waiting on one order, but since it's xmas time post can be slow. I'd give them an extra week or so before worrying.

        • @imahapyboy:

that was my plan - if nothing by about the 5/6th Jan, I'll probably put in a claim

  • -1

how much you gonna sell for your ebay id?

  • Ouch, i liked that store alot.

  • Sorry to hear this - used to buy a lot from you guys but haven't gamed much for a while now.

Great customer service and one of the few reputable online stores around …. you will be sorely missed

  • Black OPS 3 arrived today. Great game and super cheap price of $25.

    Thanks!

  • +1

And thankfully DC had managed to overcome the VA and pull through thanks to new owners. Excellent outcome.
