Testing Micro USB Cables

Hello all,

I recently downloaded Ampere for my nexus 5 to test how many Amps my charger was delivering to my phone. Something interesting that I discovered - and this depends highly upon the accuracy of the app - that cables differ drastically from each other - sometimes by 500-600 mAh. The cables that I tested were of various quality and lengths. Possibly the best cable that I tested was the short, white, flat cable that came with my Xiaomi 10,000 mAh battery pack. It charged at something like 1200 mAh from a 2A socket. I know quality and in particular length have a drastic effect on charging, but has anyone else ever tested their cables ? If so, what have they discovered ? Does any one have any recommendation for high quality cables.

  • Not a very accurate application.

I just tried 6 different branded cables at a length of 1M also a 2M cable of the same brand of 1 of the 6 cables.
and every single one of the cables except for the cheapest $1 cable all got 1200mAh the $1 cable got 950 mAh.
the single 2M cable got the same 1200mAh as the rest.

This was all done on a samsung galaxy note 3 using the original 2A samsung charger.

Main cables i use every day are
Prolink reversible micro usb 1M (id recommend these over everything but the original cables that come with your phone)
Tronsmart micro usb 1M-2M (these a close second)

ive ordered varies cables from all over cheapos from ebay kogan cables eta…

  • Yes I have tested with an amp meter. Cheap quality can be about half the rate in my experience. These cheap ones will never charge my phone past about 85%.

  • Some cheap cables vary from .3 to .75A for me… With a USB tester.
The xiaomi power bank one charges at 1.3A, same as one that came with Xiaomi phone and also the Tikbro cables…. Althought they became loose in phone sockets and stopped working after about 2 weeks
