Help me identify this audio cable

I picked a Sony media player from the dumpster today. It's an Sony CMT-SBT300WB, but it appears to be missing an audio cable.

Does anyone know if it's a proprietary standard? Any help in finding a part number would be awesome because there are some on eBAy which are ridiculously expensive ($30 dollars ea)

  • To me it looks like they've just tried to schmancy up normal speaker wires… Could you crimp a generic connector to each of the speaker wires?

    • Sorry, I know next to nothing about audio equipment. What are the connectors that would fit it? Not banana plugs right? From a bit of googling it appears the wires do terminate with some sort of Sony-branded plug, the cables themselves are just 12awg copper cables.

  • Maybe something like this would work?

    http://www.jaycar.com.au/Wire,-Cable-%26-Accessories/Cable-A…

Otherwise, Jaycar may be able to steer you to a solution… I'll keep looking.

  • Dont pay $30.

This is what i would do to test it:

Wrap normal wire speaker wire with bare ends around each of the silver bits and wrap blutack around each of the wrapped wires for insulation.

    Test it.

If that works, solder or get a mate to solder speaker wires directly onto the silver bits making sure they are not touching, then wrap blue tack once again for insulating.

If you cannot get it soldered, shoved a dirty great big heap of blue tack into the socket and pack tight…

Rough as guts but cheap, just like me.

    • Ok. So I take it it will be OK if I just get by with a meter of cheap-arse 16AWG wire and some blutack?

      • If the wires touch you are going to blow that channels amp up.

        • Hmmm. I should play it safe and use a cleaner method then… maybe some pins from a computer's MOLEX connector?

        • @scrimshaw: Insulated terminals onto amp channel contacts. Electrical tape to sheath the wire on the exposed part of terminal (if any). Pretty sure a butt terminal would work fairly well. They are easily sourced and come in varied diameters.

      • Do not just get any cheap-arse cable, if you don't know what gauge the other cable is you should be replacing both sides to match the gauge. Also cable gauge should be determined by distance and impedance of your speakers, you don't just get any.

Almost the same problem, and a solution :)

Looks like a standard 4.2mm pitch home theatre speaker connector. Lots of companies use them sony, samsung, panasonic etc - any decent electronics repair supply will have them in stock and you can make up your own cable.

    • It's actually cheaper from Aliexpress but unfortunately not that much cheaper, around $14 USD delivered.

  • tbh i'd just go to jaycar and find something suitable, then insulate each cable with heatshrink

  • If you want ithe proper item, go with the 4.2mm connector above. If you want to do it on the cheap, just use some inline bullet connectors onto a length of speaker wire. e.g. http://www.arlin.com.au/assets/media/product_images/large/ar… You can get crimp type or solder type depending on what skills you have.

    • Yeah, I might not take the risk, guess I'll get something from Alie.

Googling around there's this which is US $8.99 but it's an extra US $4.53 for shipping.

    • Thx but…Sorry nope, USD 18.47 which makes it pretty expensive. I'm sure the shipping with be much faster though but I don't need it in a hurry

  • Two small aligator clips?
