HELP ME - Need Awesome Bang for Buck Mobile Phone Sub $200

Hello,

What is currently the best bang for buck sub AUD$200 mobile phone (includes unlocking & delivery charges if needed).
I want it to work with an Amaysim sim card.
WinPhone or Android is fine.
Local Sydney Store takes preference over Australian online store takes preference over Foreign online store (for ease of purchase and warranty)

Phones I have considered so far:

  1. Lumia 640 $99 Dick Smith Optus locked
  2. LG Leon $79 when on sale at woolies etc Optus locked
  3. Moto E 2nd Gen $132 Dick Smith unlocked
  4. Sony E4G $99 Austpost etc Telstra locked

[I know bagman unlocks these phone for $20-$25], out of the above I would probably go the 640.

I could consider a known good quality Chinadroid from an online store which does not piss it's customers off.
But I don't want to be waiting more than 3-5 days to get my order.

So, whats the recommendations please.

Thanks,
A.

  • I'm waiting for LG Leon to go down to $50. This is the best bang for buck in my book.

    • How long until it's $50, I would buy it at that price, but I am ready to buy now.

        Wish I knew!

Bagman can't unlock Optus Lumia options… something to consider.

    • I looked at his website and yes it says he can.

      http://www.unlockit.codes/services.php

Optus Mobile Phones (Microsoft Lumia, Nokia, Sony Only) $AUD 25.00 1-4 Days

      Your source please ???

      • Well I put in a request unlock a Lumia 530 and it came back rejected with my credits refunded.
Double check with an email first before hand as he definitely cannot unlock all models of Lumia.

EDIT: It is also the SECOND model Lumia I've had knocked back for unlocking.

  • Huewei or however you spell it y550. usually ~130 normally, ~100 is common, ~60 is exceptional.

eGlobal is selling the Redmi Note 2, for just a little over $200 when you factor postage fee. http://www.eglobaldigitalcameras.com.au/product/xiaomi%20not…

It's a great phone — with excellent community modding support. The only downside is the battery life, which is shorter than other flagship 5.5" devices of competing brands (e.g OnePlus)

    • After updating to MIUI7 (the Redmi Note 2 launched with MIUI6) I noticed the battery life to be significantly improved. Can definitely recommend this phone over any of OP's alternatives.

    • Hi Scrimshaw,
Thanks for that, I have heard good things about the Redmi phones, what is eGlobal like as a online seller, are they honest, reliable and fast ???

For $200, if this was local Australia stock I would buy this phone in a heartbeat.

If you're looking for something cheap, I bought my mum a Motorola Moto E (1st gen, unlocked) which I picked up from Big W for $60. She's not looking to run lots of apps so the lack of ram is not a problem. It's a nice phone - it updated to 4.4 when I connected it - I'm not sure Motorola will release another update, but again, not fussed as it's great and does everything Mum needs. I considered getting another one for myself. It wasn't marked in the display box at $60 but scanned at that price so I'd assume it's nation wide if you can find stock.
    Hope that helps

  • Moto G 2nd gen, now $139.

  • Oh geez, all the choices, but I think I will go with the 640.
    For ~$99 I don't care if I drop it :-) and because it's MS I am certain I will drop it 2x :-)

Thanks everyone for your info :-)

  • How about Microsoft Lumia 532? Windows10, unlock code. $120

So I was in Sydney CBD today and went into 2 Dick Smiths shops, looked for the most helpful sales person and then gently pestered him in to letting me try the Amaysim sim in the Optus locked 640, finally got him to allow a full refund if it didn't work. I bought it for $99.

YES IT WORKED, have tested calls and texts and the phone even says Amaysim on the call button on the screen.

So, take a guess of what I think of sales people :
total 3 dick smith sales people, 1 Optus live chat person and 1 Amaysim live chat person all said that the Amaysim sim would NOT work in the phone – all of them were wrong. The optus website in it's help discussions? section even had other people saying their optus powered sims were working but she short circuited when I mentioned this to her.

I honestly hope all Australian retail goes bankrupt ! and all those sh*tty sales people lose their jobs !
It is absolutely disgusting how ignorant lazy and full of lies sales people are. And they have been that way since forever !

So to anyone thinking of buying this optus locked Lumia 640 for $99, go ahead its a great phone for the price and your optus-powered sim should work in it, mine did !

I honestly hope all Australian retail goes bankrupt !

Well, if that happens your in deep shit yourself, no matter what industry you work in.

  • There might still be some stocks on VF Huawei Mate 7 for $149 (it's actually unlocked) in some Dicksmith stores.
Maybe try your luck with that. Certainly one of the best phone below $200 price tag.

  • Xperia Z.
