Neighbour's Dog Visits My Driveway 3am Constantly

Hi guys,

My neighbour's dog has been going up my driveway late at night constantly. While this wouldn't be a problem, I have a dog of my own who can hear the slightest noises (German Shepherd ears) and this causes her to bark repeatedly. We have told the neighbour about the dog's late night visits and he doesn't seem phased by it.

I was wondering what the best method is to ensure the dog doesn't come on our turf while not having to get upset with neighbours?

Some additional details:

  • Their dog has access to the street/can hop on a bus to the city if he wanted
  • We don't have a side fence because our other neighbour is in hospital/money (This is the dog's only access point)
  • My dog is inside at night and it seems to stress her out when she hears him
  • Perpetrator Dog is a gentle golden retriever who is around 14

Thanks ozbargainers!

Be polite but firm, their dog is causing undue stress on your dog and a disturbance in general.

As a fellow dog owner ask him to be more considerate, if unphased call animal control because his dog is roaming the streets uncontrolled.

I would put up a temporary mesh fence to keep the dog out.

Never really thought of that, I could put up some chicken wire fencing. Cheers mate

  • My old Golden Retriever used to do the same thing lol. He loved going for late night walks. I ended up having to tie him up.

I suggest getting some quotes for a fence and putting that up.

Maybe some temporary fencing or some mesh from bunnings?

Yeah he is pretty innocent and a good dog, just chooses the wrong times haha

      • Yeah after the 4th time of someone ringing the house at 3am asking if we would like our golden retriever back, We made him a run with wire mesh and metal stakes. It worked fine. If the owner is old you could offer to help make one?

        • Even though you were on the "wrong" end, the 3am call is a good idea.

Get their phone number and do the same thing OP.

If you wake up, he wakes up. It's only fair.

Better than someone calling the pound on him (if you don't do it someone else might and he'll blame you anyway).

    baited meat?

    • Baited with what?

    • That has to be the most immature, inane comment I have ever seen on this site, and there have been some doozies.

Apart from the fact that it's illegal (let alone immoral) to bait someone else's dog, you'd suggest it for the HUGE offence of being out walking at 3am?

        hhhmmmm….
        1. it's legal
        2. it was said with my tongue firmly planted in my cheek, but again it's still legal. people do it all the time for wandering dogs (in the country)
        3. there is no 3

I would complain to the neighbour again and if they do nothing I think you need a fence unfortunately….gotta love the inconsiderate neighbours out there!
