Super Overpriced Items on eBay?

Occasionally I notice items on eBay that are way overpriced, like an old smartphone for $999 or like this deal for an iPad Mini wanting $6,500: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/NEW-Apple-iPad-mini-3-with-Retina…

Can anyone explain why these items are listed with such outrageous prices? Are they just hoping that someone will come along and they'll win the jackpot? Or is it something else?

I'm sure someone can confirm or explain it more clearly but I have read here on previous threads that it costs money for a company to relist an item. So if it is temporarily out of stock, they will increase the price to something outrageous so no-one buys it. This effectively places the listing on hold without removing it until they have more stock of that item.

Thanks, that makes sense! I was wondering if it was some kind of scam, but just could get the angle.

Yeah this sounds about right, I've heard that hyper overpriced items can suggest a laundering scheme. They use certain phrases or words in their descriptions for those searching for such a service. Can't say it is true though.
