Do I lose my Health Insurance Extras benefit for 2015 if my claim is not processed until 2016?

Extras usually end 31 December.

If I make a purchase online tonight or tomorrow for contact lenses and then claim, it's likely my claim will be processed in 2016.

I have not used my 2015 benefit at all.

Have I effectively lost my 2015 benefit?

I ordered a pair of glasses last week. Will pay/claim when they arrive in the new year.
According to the optometrist they can 'back-date' it up to 30 days so I have effectively used my 2015 cover even though I wont receive them until 2016.

  • The claim comes out of the benefit when the membership card is swiped/used
So provided they process the payment for the items before jan 1.. you are all good.

  • What if it's an Internet order? I think I need to pay first and then claim? The internet order will have today's date in 2015, but there's no way the claim will be processed in 2015 for an online order.

    • As long as your invoice date is for this year it's fine. You can claim from your health insurer next year. Even if you bought the items this year, and then cancelled your membership next year, you can still claim for the purchase you made when you had cover.

      • Thanks. Just making sure I won't end up using my 2016 entitlement accidentally as I will probably want to claim again in 2016.

Yeah the invoice date needs to be 2015, the cut off with most private health for claims in previous year is Jan 30

  • Was told by Specsavers when we ordered new glasses prior to Christmas to make sure we paid for them if they were delayed as payment after end of Dec would qualify.
She said again, glasses should be here before then, but if not come in and pay so we did not lose benefit. Best call to check.

  • I rang up my provider (it's what I should have done) and they confirmed your entitlement year matches your receipt, not when you claim.

    Solved!
