  • That's cheap considering the cheapest I can find 8GB DIMMs of that kind on eBay is $93.44 delivered and $99.95 + delivery in australia according to staticice.com.au.

  • what's the practical purpose of having greater than the stock 2gb ram in gen8 while running xpenology? Just better hd streaming performance?

I think it's more for Freenas and other ZFS file system. It needs 2gb for OS and then 1GB per TB or storage.

    • You could easily deploy a lot of applications using Docker.

    • 16GB is really more for running it as a hypervisor (VM) / container (Docker etc.) host. For NAS use it is probably overkill.

Unless, as someone said, you're going to run ZFS with FreeNAS or vanilla FreeBSD. ZFS loves RAM.

I've ordered a quad core Xeon and mine is going to run 4-8 virtual machines, ideal for a home lab.

I chucked 10GB in mine and it still wasn't enough to run ZFS with freenas which was quite a surprise. Whenever I started transferring files it would seize up and reboot and this was on a plain install.

I would just avoid ZFS on the microservers.

      • Which Xeon did you get, where from, and how much did you pay? I've been looking for a good price on a Xeon E3-1230 v2, but keep missing them on eBay

Anyone know if this will work in a Microserver N40L (Gen 7)?

  • Buy this and sell one?

  • Pretty Good Price, great for ESXI or running a few VMs. I ended up going with 8Gb which can be had for around $80 ( http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Samsung-8GB-2x4GB-2Rx8-PC3-10600E… ). I had to buy some on the quick after my Gen 8 refused to boot with my old DDR3 (non ECC ram).

Economy delivery ! That's going to be anything but quick.

      Amazon's still a better option for 8GB: http://www.amazon.com/Crucial-PC3-12800-Unbuffered-240-Pin-CT102472BA160B/dp/B006YG8ZNI/ref=pd_sim_147_2?ie=UTF8&dpID=31cqxPjy%2B6L&dpSrc=sims&preST=AC_UL160_SR160%2C160&refRID=1QDNNRS0995XTF5WSY73

~$89 delivered, faster delivery, and it's a single 8GB stick so you have the option to upgrade late + you get to keep a 2GB stick so you have 10GB, not 8GB.

      • Nice! Also it runs at 1600Mhz which is nice if you ever upgrade the CPU to an Xeon or i3 and will allow it to run faster. I ended up buying a few of these Microservers so I used the 2GB module in another one anyway, but that's a much better deal than what I posted.

  • Good price.

    I've got a Gen8, with 16gb and a second hand Xeon 1220L running esx.

    Great bit of hardware.

I have 5 of these for my cluster (ceph+openstack) and another that runs Oracle Solaris for ZFS, mostly use kingston ecc ram in them.

You might want to check the compatibility wizard http://www.crucial.com/usa/en/compatible-upgrade-for/HP-Comp…

    Which has http://www.crucial.com/usa/en/proliant-microserver-gen8/CT44… listed

    Which comes up as $99usd on amazon Crucial 16GB Kit (8GBx2) DDR3/DDR3L-1600MT/s (PC3-12800) DR x8 ECC http://www.amazon.com/Crucial-DDR3L-1600MT-PC3-12800-CT2KIT1…

For those that wish to upgrade to the xeon keep in mind that Hp have released a new heatsink (its a heatpipe type) that matches the i3 models which also has an upgraded psu, I am trying to dig up the part number from parts surfer at the moment

    (edit)
Heatsink HP Part Number 832667-001 Heat-sink 65W - For use with ProLiant Microserver
PSU HP Part Number 724497-001 - Power supply 200W Micro Gen8
?? Thats odd the OP's kit is now showing the same part number and is $99, meh

    • tl;dr It's officially supported by Crucial for the Gen8 Microserver. Thanks! Didn't know that.

  • I've been waiting for these to drop in price. Almost bit at US $120.

  • AUD$145.99 at https://www.ramcity.com.au/upgrade/hp-compaq/proliant-server…

Obviously that doesn't take delivery into consideration (cheapest is $9.90 for auspost), but Australian supplier.

    • +3

That's Non ECC. OP posted ECC Unbuffered, which is what suits a GEN8

      • Ah, curse my failing eyesight/lack of attention/delete as applicable.

  • No longer shipping to Australia (probably a different supplier) and price is up to US$115.05 without shipping.

  • +1

In case anyone is still interested. This is back on, fulfilled by amazon and shipped. $105USD, approx $156AUD. Curse our exchange rate.

    • Ordered and delivered. Installed this afternoon without a hiccup. 15.3GB of free RAM in my Gen8 now.

  • It seems 2 of these http://www.amazon.com/Crucial-PC3-12800-Unbuffered-240-Pin-C… would be cheaper than this. Could anyone confirm whether this is supported by the the HP G1610T?

  • +1

Yes - check the model number it's the same Model.

    • Thanks
