Bang For Buck Graphics Card + 4K Monitor

Hey Guys,

I'm looking at upgrading my 24" monitor to something 27-29" possibly 4K & GPU to accommodate. (unless it can be done without)

I don't play games, it will mainly be for day to day tasks with a little netflix.

  • Asus P8Z68-VLX Mobo
  • Intel Core i5 2500K
  • 16GB ram
  • Gainward Geforce 210 1GB DDR3 graphics card (Current Card)

Your advice would be appreciated

Thanks in advance

I don't get why you mentioned the possibility of 4K when you stated:

I don't play games, it will mainly be for day to day tasks with a little netflix.

4K for Web browsing, Excel, MS Paint and watching a few Southpark episodes on Netflix?

Just grab a 27" Samsung 1080 LED monitor for ~300 and you're good to go

    • Thanks for the prompt response, so a 27-29" running off my current card should be sweet? Will i see poor quality images going to a larger size screen?

      • At work, I have 2x 27" Samsung Monitors running off an nVidia NVS 300 which is a shittier card to the low-end GT 210 you have.

If you want to run DivX movies/HD content, yes it will stagger/skip
If you want to play Skyrim or Fallout 4, yes it will give you 5 frames per second (if it actually runs)

However if your browsing the net, Youtube, etc, it should be fine. I still suggest you aim for a $60-$100 video card as you were going to waste that for a 4K monitor anyway =)

    • No he won't be good to go, the Gainward 210 will not only lag like hell for multimedia, I don't even think the Geforce 210 can even output 4k due to hardware limitations.

Also assuming your 2X samsung monitors at work are 1080p, 4K is still double the amount as it is about 4X 1080p

      • Which is why, had you properly read my comment. I advised the OP no need for 4K if they're browsing and occasional Netflix.
As a result, a 1080p 27" will suffice with his card

I think what he wants is more screen estate. Like fit more stuff onto one screen without scrolling as much or flipping windows as much either.

  • So should i bother upgrading this card? To atleast assist the larger screen size? Thanks in advance

why dont you just get the monitor and try it out with the current video card

you dont really get any discounts buying everything at once (besides petrol and time spent going back and forth i guess)

      • This sounds like a good idea

  • If you are going to upgrade to a 27" dual monitor setup @ 1080p, it would probably be advisable to upgrade your GPU. If you do want to go for a 4K monitor, then it definitely needs to be upgraded.

    • I was thinking of future proofing.. but then again all i need is a single monitor.. just 27+ inch

      • while a GPU upgrade certainly would not hurt in your case

no point doing it for the sake of "proofing" your machine especially if its only one component

        • Out of curiosity.. what would you upgrade to? Ive had a little read online.. alot of people are saying to hold off for new gen cards coming out..

        • @Daves88: i would probably get something like r9 380 or gtx 960 however i do abit of gaming so i need something slightly beefier

for you a GT730 probably do

        • Thanks bud, i'll start searching for one.. what brand monitor are you running with it?

        • @Daves88:
i have a samsung, asus and acer which i switch between the lappy and desktop

forget the models…they are all pretty old and not very big (think the biggest is 24")

i'm due for an upgrade but the ozbargainer in me wont let me spend money on monitor while the old ones are still going strong

        • @humdingaling:

Awesome, now for my ozbargain instinct to kick in…

I'm actually tossing up between Samsung & BenQ or maybe Acer. Have you had any experience with AOC?

        • @Daves88: have not personally owned an AOC so cant really comment
i did have a BenQ back in with my pentium..still works fine (i think) sitting in garage collecting dust

no issues with my Acer…have had it for 3 years now still running fine

the samsung did glitch out on my after 2 years….i replaced cords and did some restores and havent had issues with it since….have had it for 5 years

  • I built a micro itx with a low end i5 a 7990 and the 4k samsung 28" budget tn for under $1000 gets 60+ fps in bf4 on ultra settings hard to pickup a 7990 now though good luck !
