Just got an iPhone 6S from Optus is it unlocked?

Hi all, I am planning to flog my iPhone 6s that came on an Optus plan as an upgrade but when I checked the apple website it came out saying :

"Please activate your iPhone
We are unable to display coverage details because your iPhone has not been activated.
Please contact your iPhone retailer or wireless carrier to activate your iPhone."

Do I need to put in my own sim card before it unlocks itself?
I dont want to open the plastic packaging.

Thanks in advance

  • From memory you need a sim in the phone to set it up.

All iPhones as far as I know are wither unlocked or unlockable for free.

    • by sim do you mean any sim or an optus sim?

      • Not sure mate, sorry.

        Can't hurt to try though.

        • Yeah thanks for that. Ill just put it up on gumtree and get the guy to contact me if there are any problems.

  • Optus/Telstra/Vodafone have not locked iPhones (or any postpaid devices) since the 4S
(early 4s was locked but then it stopped)

So you can be confident its not locked.

    • That's not actually true. We purchased an iphone 5s prepaid from JB for our son for Christmas & it was locked to Telstra.

      • Prepaid phones are generally locked, plan phones are generally not.

  • From the Optus website…
Doesn't look like they are locked

  • Thanks for the comments. Just sold the phone and havent heard any bad news so far so Id say the the phone was unlocked for future reference.
