When to get Europe Summer tickets?

I'm now looking to book return tickets to Europe for the late June - mid July period. Can get them for around 1650 (checked Melbourne to any euro city and that was the best price, forgot where to).
Should we pull the trigger, given that we probably missed the early bird specials? Or may some sales go on anytime soon? Thanks heaps in advance

  • Any help greatly appreciated!

    • May be able to find a little cheaper than that depending where/when/how long you are going for.

Also, if you want to stop over on the way and book separate tickets to Asia then can definitely be had cheaper.

If you're honestly after any city in late(20-30) June to mid (10-20) of July then I'll have a look for you but you're probably better saying where you want to go than just booking cheap tickets. The savings can easily be lost by having to use internal transport or unwanted over night stays in places…

Just to give you an example of a route I just looked at if you were to stopover in Asia:

MEL - KUL on AirAsia is $269 for June 20/21/22 although you can probably wait and it will be on special for < $200
      KUL - Frankfurt on 23/6
Budapest - Singapore on 19/7 booked as multicity trip for $750 through Kayak flying Turkish Airlines.
Singapore - MEL for $190 on Jetstar pretty much any day after 20/7 price beating Scoot on this route.

= $1210 and lots of different cities to visit!

You can do a similar trip to London and return from Paris for similar price or return Rome back to KUL for $50 cheaper…

      • Thanks heaps for the detailed info! My only concern is that I was planning on the trip being around 2 weeks, stopping over at Asian countries there and back adds a few days especially since I'd be worried if the stopover wasn't a day or two in length in case something went wrong and we had to rebook. Looking at going to London, Amsterdam, Paris, Spain, Lisbon, possibly Munich.
Is it likely that something may go wrong and the Asian stopover will screw up leaving me in a dire situation?
        Thanks again

        • Sorry for the delay, I missed the notification!

It is always a risk you miss the flight which is why I'd recommend insurance that covers missed connections but if you're not planning to have a stop over in either direction it may not be worth your while.

If you don't want to waste much time you can always do the first step on discount and then a multi city ticket back to Melbourne…

          eg. MEL-SIN on June 20th with Jetstar dep 11:15 AM arr 16:50 PM for $189 + $30 baggage = $220

          Multi city on Qatar

          SIN-BCN June 21st @ 02:25AM with Qatar via Doha length: 15h 55m
BCN-MEL July 5th with Qatar via Doha length: 22h 55m
          $1176

          Total: $1396

Or to fit better with your travel plans, flying in to BCN and then out of Munich is $70 extra… Then you don't need to back track for your return flight. If you play around with the cities and dates you can find similar for most major destinations but BCN-Munich seemed to make the most sense.

  • +1

Thanks for the thread, thought I'd give it a bump.
I'm looking to get 2 (very experienced) adults, one (good traveller) toddler, to Dublin.
This thread has given some great ideas.

  • I'm also waiting for some Euro summer sales. From memory they do tend to appear in Feb? Where did you get $1,650 from in June/July? Can't see any decent fares from Qantas, Emirates, Etihad, Cathay, Qatar, Singapore…

  • After going around to some travel agencies I'm pretty sure they said that the sales are August/September for the following summer, all I know is that by the time we booked (January) it was getting a bit late for us to wait and risk paying even more closer to the date. Seeing as it's a peak period, I personally doubt that they'd offer many closer-to-the-date cheap fares… We ended up biting the bullet and getting a $1900 flight with Qatar Air that suited our itinerary really well and only had a very short stopover. If you've got the time to wait around a day in an asian country then it can get a little cheaper but for us it was niether here nor there and we didn't have the time to waste 2 days there and 2 back.
