Replacing a Zenfone 6 - what's good at the moment?

I bought a Zenfone 6 when it was fairly new, so I've had it for 18+ months now. I've been pretty happy with it considering it was only ~$250 when I got it. The large form factor has been fine for me, and app support for x86 processors seems to have improved.

Lately it's started to misbehave in ways that suggest that the hardware might be failing, and all the more recent stock app updates seem to be getting worse, and many are incorporating ads!

I'm thinking it's time to look at replacing it.

Features I want:

  • NextG band support (850mhz)
  • 5.3" to 6.2" screen
  • 2GB+ of RAM
  • battery life of well over 24 hours for standard use
  • MicroSD slot
  • 16GB+ internal memory
  • Easy access to root and load ROMS.

What phones are recommended now in the $200-$300 range that fit my needs? Is the Redmi Note 3 still good, or has something better come along that people recommend? Should I look at Oppo instead for openness?

  • . Easy access to root and load ROMS.
This is the hardest bit, at least in the $200-300 range.

and this is pretty hard to find too
. battery life of well over 24 hours for standard use

XIAOMI Note 3 is probably your best bet unless you're willing to compromise on the custom ROM support.
In which case LeTV 1S and Doogee F5 look decent.

    • Looking further, the note 2 prime might be better than the note 3. Same CPU, less ram, but with an SD slot. You're right about ROM's though, there's not even a CM rom for them.

  • Bought my wife an Oppo Find 7 from MobileCiti over Christmas for $299. Would go pretty close if you can sweet talk them into doing that deal again.

  • Interestingly, just saw another post that the LG G3 is $256 from many ebay stores. It's an old device, but it's an old top of the line device so it's probably still better than the Redmi Note 2. For $60 extra it might be worth a look.

    • Careful with the 2Gb version.. Lots of issues.
And there are multiple versions of LG G3, only a few of which are good Aus phones.
