Momentum Bikes Website Good?

Been looking at this website for bikes but not sure if the bikes are trustworthy and there is just positive reviews which is limited to 4 reviews per bike. Anyone buy from this site before? Would be much appreciated for any comments.

  • most bikes out of stock anyway.

  • What kind of bike are you after? What sort of riding do you want to do? Those bikes are at the low end of the market, in general - there is one road bike with a 105 groupset, which is excellent.

    • Just a bike I can ride on the road and go on dirt/grass as well. Wanting to bike from Ingleburn to Fairfield area. Can you like me to a decent bike with a good price. Only wanted to try a low end bike, then upgrade in future if I stick with biking.

      • only really wanna spend around 500$ or under

  • have a look at Amart Sports at the Crossroads, Casula, they have quite a few selections and they may let you try in the car park before you buy. May not be the best price but one guy works there seems to know what he is talking about.

  • I have never seen a momentum bike but from the specs at least they have standard Shimano components. The bike with the 105 has the older 10 speed groupset (not the newer 5800 11 speed groupset) but what can you expect for under $1K I guess. I am not sure I would upgrade any of these, if you get to the stage where you are wanting to upgrade you will find that the upgrade parts you buy will be worth more than you've paid for this bike most likely.

For a road/trail bike most of the momentum bikes look like they are cheap versions of road bikes. I expect they will have 23" tyres on those rims and that wouldn't be fun on wet grass or mud. Without knowing what kind of riding you would do here are some options:

These are all Hybrid type bikes suitable for bike paths, inner city bike lanes, a little bit of on road or little bit of dirt path type riding.

If you have a Local Bike Shop (LBS) go in there and have a chat with the guys. Generally bike shops are your best bet and if they are a little bit more expensive than online they normally make up for it by giving a free helmet/pedals/pump in the sale. They will also set the bike up for you (right saddle height, stem length etc) and most give a free 1st service etc. Dont underestimate the importance of getting the right setup, nothing annoys me more than seeing somebody riding around with a saddle way too low, it's a cyclist thing but it drives me mad! Some give the 1st year's worth of servicing as part of the sale. If you bought your bike from them most are great guys to stay in touch with as they will help you when something wears out or a bit breaks. If you buy your bike from them and you hear an annoying squeak/rub/shudder in the bike you can take it straight back and their mechanics will probably fix on the spot! Mail order bikes normally arrive in a big box and require some assembly, if something goes wrong you are normally on your own (some online sellers have service points you can take your bike to).

My LBS guy comes on rides with us and…cough….cough…ahem…might even have secret 'lock-ins' on friday afternoons with beers in the bike workshop for the regulars…..just sayin'.

There is normally a load of bike shops searchable by area and price advertising bikes for sale on www.bikexchange.com.au
