Cancellling AMEX Issued Velocity Escape & Qantas Cards

So I called to cancel my AMEX issued Qantas card as I never use it and always use the velocity card. Long story short the AMEX operative offered me 23,000 Qantas points not to cancel the card with no obligations (Qantas account to be credited in 2-5 days) so I accepted and will continue to not use it.

Now, does anyone know if I go to cancel the Velocity Escape card they will offer me similar? I would call now but about to go on a flight and also don't want to push my luck!

Cheers.

  • I'm not sure there's a tried-and-tested method to extract freebies out of credit card companies. Sometimes they're more willing to give you bonus points or waive fees if you're a big spender, but if you never use the card they might be reluctant to give you much.

Best bet is to call them to cancel and see if they put anything on the table. If not, you were cancelling it anyway - if they do give you Velocity points, you lucked out!

  • Yep will give it a bash - use the Velocity card everyday so hopefully our mates at AMEX load me up with some nice points….or say "sorry to see you go, bye".

    Thanks!

  • If you really want to cancel without getting an offer of points, it's quicker to email them from within yr account. If you want an offer, best to phone up.

  • Thats an excellent offer. Are you required to keep it open for a specific period or can you call up next week and cancel?

    • The AMEX Customer Service guy said I could cancel whenever I like but "always good to have as a back up" etc so took him at his word. Still awaiting points transfer though.

Once my Velocity card is cleared I'll try and cancel that next week and see what happens.

  • I'll be calling in a few weeks as my Qantas Amex first year is up which I think brings with it a $499 annual fee, will be interesting to see what they offer. I've put close to $50000 through it in the year I've had it.

Was an Aus bargain deal so probably a few of us will be calling to cancel shortly

    • My card has no annual fee so you should be in for a good win…hopefully.

      • Was it the card you got from here when they accidentally advertised no annual fee for the first year? I think it was 60000 FF points?

        • Sorry, can't remember - had card since early 2013 but never paid a fee on it and used only once to book a Qantas flight.

  • Quick update on this - I spoke to AMEX yesterday as hadn't received any points to my Qantas Account, however, they have transferred all points through the Qantas system and it just a matter of waiting a week or so until they are processed. So, to confirm 23,000 points credit for threatening to cancel a fee-free card which will sit in my drawer for the foreseeable future.

  • Further update - received all Qantas points a couple of days ago. Also, though I would chance it and called AMEX to cancel the Velocity Card I have, guess what - 23,000 velocity points offered to keep card!

I just called Amex about cancelling my velocity card. The guy ask why, I said It didn't get as much offer as my Qantas card. The guy then ask my day of birth the address. And the card got cancelled straight away LoL

  • Always ask if there if they can give you any reason not to cancel it.

  • This time around it wasn't quite as easy but when i said my reason was because I could get more bonus points on a new sign up with my bank she offered me 23,000 straight away….

  • You just got lucky. I had some somewhat unpleasant experience with their customer service even though I have been Amex member for about 18 years and have been spending a lot of money with them as well as paying high annual fee. Their customer rep didn't care at all and just offered to downgrade my card to the one with a lower annual fee which had less benefits.

  • Amex customer service is second to none. I called them to cancel my card to apply for a homeloan and mentioned that I would re-apply once my homeloan is approved. They cancelled my card and reinstated it within a month. Technically, I keep using my card until now and didn't know why I could still use it even it has been cancelled.

Just called to cancel my card as the $499 annual fee is due, they offered me 15000 QFf points or a lower card, I went ahead & cancelled my account. My spend over the past year was just over $80,000

^ This is crazy! …and I don't know why - I have literally just been credited 23,000 VFF points today from the threat of cancelling my (FREE/NO FEE) Velocity AMEX card and (FREE/NO FEE) QFF AMEX was credited 23,000 a couple of weeks ago!

I still have booth cards, only use one of them and no obligation to hold onto either of them…

I have had both cards for ~3 years.
