Fishing Setup

Hi Everyone,

Could anyone give me some advice on a decent fishing rod, line and reel set up.

Places I fish are mostly off banks of rivers and jettys/piers. I don't do rock fishing. I occasionally go on boats for large reef fish.

I target the usual kingies, barra and bream.

I don't want a massive rod because I want to be able to take it with me on the plane. Should I buy a thicker more stronger line for the end so the fish don't bite through? What pound rating? Etc

What -
Rod
Line
Tracer
Reel

Price range from $250-$500

Thanks for your help.

Shimano Stradic Ci4+ 3000 series reel with some sort of light weight 2-3 piece rod (maybe something from Samaki - they have a "Zing" travel series. These perform well and are not overly expensive). Then some 10-12lb braid and you should be set for the majority of your fishing. Maybe not the larger fish like kingies, but I have this setup with a 1 piece Samaki Zing rod and I use it for anything from squid and whiting to decent sized snapper.

Kingies and large reef fish are a different kettle of fish. For those you need a different setup when you go offshore. You can still reel in some on your 2000-3000 reels, but if you wanna land them you need something more substantial to reel them in quick or you gonna lose a fair few. on the other hand, you would have lotsa stories to tell about the one that got away…

    • Hi Babymos,

      Thanks for your advice.

Sadly I have lost a few biggies - Have no idea what they were. I was too scared to be rough with it because the line would have broken.

I wanted some 40lb braided line so i could pull in the big boys and turn their heads when they are making a dash.
