Europe Self Driving Tour / Accommodation

Hi guys

I am thinking of doing a self driving tour of the Europe

I guess the route that I was thinking of was

London -> France -> Italy

Few questions about this plan:

  1. Has anyone done this before?
Is it feasible in 2-3 weeks

  2. Approximate cost?

  3. Is this a good idea?

  4. Also, what kind of accommodation do you guys use in Europe? (airbnb / hostels)

I am looking for cheapish accmmodation but I would not want to share rooms with others (going with my wife)

Thank you for your help guys

  • I have done uk<->France when I lived there, and separately Italy.
The approach I liked was to get a self contained holiday rental for 5 days or a week in a central location and do day trips. That meant a long drive between bases, but then short trips. Things are pretty close together, so there is lots to see. Even so, France is a big place, so choose a reasonable itinerary. Also bear in mind I was touring the countryside, I could easily spend a few weeks in London/Paris/Rome each on their own, and a car would be a hassle in each of these cities - although I have driven in all three and the stories of crazy traffic are true, but you get used to it fast.
Check out cheznous.co.uk for a sample of holiday houses to rent if this is of interest.
It will be a great trip, and I am super jealous!

  • hostels with private rooms could be a good mix… stay in nice hotel every 3rd night to keep ur misses happy

  • It might not be suitable for you but if you can do the trip in reverse there are a lot of wicker campers in Rome that need to go back to london. Price works out to be about $20/day (with insurance and hire fees) but excluding petrol. I drove Rome to Amsterdam but they did offer me to drop it off in london.
    Website is imoova.com.au

a different suggestion is boating parts of your trip from france. i did a trip 21 days with 3 friends from france to italy. We arrived from london to paris via eurostar, traveled the french countryside, got to toulouse jumped on a self drive river boat penchette traveled down garonne river out to sea hugged the coast got to Rome (civitavecchia), napoli, sicily, sardinia, corse, back to Montpellier to drop off the boat. boat provided accommodation toilet kitchen small midget shower. smooth all down the river, we essentially stopped anywhere we liked

    • Have you got a link to the boat company?
