Seeking bang for buck car speakers! What is currently the best place to buy speakers?

Hi guys,

I bought this Head Unit for my old Toyota Tarago, and I'm being given a sub woofer and amp so Im pretty glad Im able to upgrade the old camper van with some decent equipment.

I'm looking in to replacing all the wiring… but I definitely need to purchase some new speakers… these old crackly things just wont do, they just wont do.

So where is the current go-to-place for deals on decent quality sound and speakers?

If I was to order online, I would really need them to arrive within 24-48 hours!!

not sure if its me but i fnd the speakers on toyota camry pretty bass heavy.

  • If it was me I'd buy whatever are the cheapest on special from supercheap repco autobarn etc.

Just measure the cone size and buy brand name replacements. I wouldnt bother with the wiring, just use whatever is there first AND if then there is a wiring issue, replace the wiring but I wouldnt replace it without replacing cones first.

I always see cheapo Sony or Kenwood or whatever Jap brand coaxial spks for under $50.

    • fair enough, maybe I will go for that. Especially for the Tarago Van anyway…

Im usually just so passionate about sound quality that I dont mind spending extra on special brands that offer EXCELLENT quality sound.

Eg I wont get a Sony or Panasonic home theatre/surround sound speakers… I will spend more in an Audio Visual specialist store and get the brands that build standing loud speakers and surround cinema speakers, annd I will bargain hunt from there (still many hundres of $ more than the sony surround sound speakers or small bluetooth systems around the house)

Good tip on the wiring.. Could be a big job that may be avoided.. I will see how the current wiring goes first

      • Sure, you're like me. I used to be into hifi and surround sound and I love English speakers like B&W Mission and even the aus brands like VAF Duntech whatever. Hell I still have Meridian and Parasound equipment in the garage… yes I know, several thousand dollar stuff packed in boxes isnt good.

But for cars, I have always driven loud turbo and v8 cars so its pointless getting really high end gear like Focal although I fantasise about owning a big luxury car with a high end audio system one day.

But I like driving more than car audio so I only have Japanese audio crap in my car. As long as the vocals are clear and the music sounds close to what I expect it to be at home, I'm good.

  • So I ended up just popping in to a Car Audio specialist shop in Port Melbourne as I picked up a parcel at nearby Toll.

They're called [No Limit] (www.nolimitcsv.com.au) and the guy there helped me rrriightt at the end of the day with a decent cheap package just before 5pm. Was really happy with his attitude to assist me even though I hadnt made prior arrangements.

It looks like they're quite popular with fitting a whole system in your car for you. Like you drive in, wait around, and you drive out with a brand new sound system.

I have to do mine myself though! still working on it

    Cheers guys.

  • Car speakers don't generally sound that much different. The most important thing is what drives them. If you plan on buying decent car speakers but want to drive them from your internal radio - you'll underpower them and they will break.

If you want a decent sounding system - you need an amp and speaker package.

Car Sound installers have a handbook for speaker sizes for particular cars make / model / year.

Once you know which speakers your car takes - you can then hunt for a package.

Some stock systems are amplified already but always worth getting a decent amp.

    • I think this stereo (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/3385962/redir) puts out decent power for my 4 speakers (50W each )

I already picked up the right size speaker and the Car Audio shop even suggested putting shittier cheap speakers in the back, because like you said, they dont matter tremendously. (

Plus this is a campervan and I wont be in the back very much, and with the shape of the Van being quite a big open space, the acoustics are not the best to take advantage of really nice speakers. They are the ax100 axis speakers for $30.

Ive got an amp to install in the boot for the Sub, but I will look in to using this for the speakers down the track if need be.
