[Require your opinion] Which Childcare Course Is Better?

Hi all,

My wife is looking for a childcare course with cert III. I searched online to get a good institute for online or class room trainings but unable to select one as we are new to Sydney, Australia. As we are fairly new to Australia, I felt Ozbargain is best place to get valuable and different suggestions. We are looking for below criteria.

  1. Looking for 6 months course.
  2. The fee I am willing to pay is around one grand to $1500.
  3. Good placements from that institute.
  4. In and around Parramatta/Blacktown and online
    is preferred.
  5. We are permanent residents, do we have any free Childcare courses available?

My wifes background: She have 6 years of office administration experience in India.

Thanks in advance and looking for your valuable suggestions.

Okay, depending on your situation the first thing to remember is the fact that if your wife has newly arrived to Australia and does not have the necessary citizenship or visa requirements to permanently stay in Australia she will not get funding from the government to do her course. Thus, the fee that you have envisaged may not be sufficient for the course. I'm not sure how permanent residency works in this realm, so you'd have to do some research there.

Secondly, you should be looking at renowned universities and TAFEs for the correct course. Certificate 3 is good, but a Diploma would likely be better in the long run in terms of employability. There is an abundance of C3 holders in this industry, and if your wife does not have the relevant experience here then the C3 won't do her many favours; a Diploma would give her at least some advantage. But this will be roughly double the price of a C3 course.

Thirdly, always look for a provider that displays the 'Nationally Recognised Training' logo. There will be countless of rogue providers who claim to give C3 courses for $300, with no placements necessary, can be completed in 2 months, etc. They will scam you. They do not issue genuine qualifications.

A C3 course should take about 6 months full time, and a Diploma 12 months. Double these times if she's is doing it part time. Both courses have placements as a mandatory requirement. It might be tempting to take the easy way out in terms of finance and required effort, but going to a non-recognised, non-accredited training provider may render your wife's qualification invalid.

I understand you are in NSW, but as a guide, international students at Swinburne (VIC) will pay $7250 + amenities charges + course materials for a C3 course. Again, you'll have to check up if permanent residency qualifies for local student status. If so, about $4000 should be your budget for Certificate 3.

To answer your final question, there are no free childcare courses available to any student.

    Hope this helps.

    • Thanks for your detailed info. I will check once again in Google if there is any TAFE courses are avilable in Sydney. One more question, can we complete C3 in 6 months full time and take diploma as part time?

C3 is the first half of the Diploma, so they can't be completed at the same time.

So if you do a C3 and then later decide to do the Diploma, you will only have to pay half of the Diploma fees and complete the second half of the Diploma.

Logistically, it is difficult for universities to change your status (full time to part time, or reverse) and some providers might not allow this at all. Speak to your chosen provider, and you could come up with an arrangement then.

If all else fails, best thing would be to complete C3 in 6 months full time, then enrol in the Diploma for the second half part time (which would be 1 year). Or, you could start the Diploma right away if your provider permits changing part/full time status mid-course.

      • My partner studied the Cert 3 and is currently completing the Diploma at TAFE NSI (Northern Sydney Institute) at Meadowbank. To my understanding there is another campus at Crows Nest.

Cert 3 was 6 months and Diploma 12 months. Both with plenty of professional experiences as the campus itself has a "Play Centre" where local children can come in and enjoy the experiences planned by the students. There is also a placement at an external centre every semester from memory. Another thing is that there was even an opportunity to travel overseas with a short exchange program! They travelled to Guangzhou China to see how Early Childhood Education worked over there.

As for your question, I'm fairly certain that's possible, you'll just need to sort that out at enrolment.

As far as I know the TAFE even has a partnership with a university where the C3 and Dip can take two years off the equivalent Degree at Charles Sturt.

        • These are good suggestions. Let me see if TAFE NSI have any centers in West Sydney.

          @neonixcoder:

Ah, missed the Western Sydney bit in the post, sorry!

You'll be looking for the WSI (Western Sydney Institute) in that case.

          This link should help

          http://wsi.tafensw.edu.au/courses-and-careers/childrens-serv…

The courses seem to be offered at several campuses as well as an online option (OTEN)

Best of luck with the search :)

Many childcare centres will not look at people who have online cert 3 or diploma. Did you know there is a traineeship in childcare available? Your wife could ask for a week trial to be taken on for a traineeship where you study and work at the same time and earn a small wage.

    • I am not aware that she can study and work. Do you have any link or some contact so that I can get more details on this?

  • Hi, as an ex-permanent resident and now citizen, I'm fairly sure that your wife would qualify for domestic student fees. I enrolled for my master's the day after my PR was approved and paid less than half the international fees.

Suggest your wife gets down to the local TAFE, explains her residency status and see what they say. I reckon there's a very good chance she would qualify for a subsidised place as long as she doesn't have any other higher qualifications. And to be honest, if she did, and they were from india, there's no way they'd ever know.

She's going to need to do the Diploma course to get anywhere with this, but at least a Cert 3 at TAFE will articulate into this course.

I'd personally stay away from private providers and online courses. There's a storm coming in VET for good reason; a lot of private VET providers are sharks who will take your money, promise you the moon on the stick and leave you with nothing.

    • Searched some TAFE stuff, Sending my wife to TAFE, Blacktown tomorrow. Let me see how it goes.

search seek and type childcare and traineeships. But most childcare traineeships are not advertised, you have to approach childcare centres directly. I am not from Sydney so I cannot find the ads that are close to you. The wage is very minimal something like $150-$200 a week, I forget exactly how much.

As of mid this year the minimum requirements to work in child care is a diploma. This is often why cert 3s are cheap at the moment. Try to jump straight in to the diploma level. My wife works in childcare but is studying a degree in another field.

    • Sarge2401, thanks for letting us know this before my wife takes up Cert III.
