Switching to TPG (Now on Voda Network) Do They Ever Do Discounts / Deals?

Anyone know?

I'm on Telechoice, have been since May 2014, had a gutful of a Telstra network dropping out (!!!?) it's too frequent, almost once or twice per trip out of the house (I'm a homebody)
My data / entire cell signal shouldn't be dropping out on a 3G TELSTRA (!) network multiple times every time I'm outdoors.

Anyhow, does anyone know if there's a deal, discount, cashreward, cheaper SIM, bonus credit or some other trickery to get TPG cheaper?
Looking at this sucker right here: https://www.tpg.com.au/mobile/callrates.php $20 per month for 1.3GB and 4G (unlike Telechoice having only 3G)

Also, does it make it harder to switch to someone if I wanna port my number in?
Thanks.
P.S Anyone else using these guys and have any pro / anti comments?
Thanks!

"Also, does it make it harder to switch to someone if I wanna port my number in?"

Not really. Porting is quite easy. Just have your account # ready (if post-paid), or DOB (if pre-paid).

    • I guess my point is, say I do find some kind of wacky "$30 of credit on this SIM for only $2!!" deal, can you still port INTO one of those SIMs or is that number pre-configured already?

      • Yes you can… porting is that easy. That's how some people work through their stockpile of prepaid SIMS — they just port the number by calling the SIM activation hotline and get the CSP to port the old number into the new sim.

        • Now to find a TPG SIM for less than the advertised value provided, thanks

Have used them in the past.

I have never known a way to discount TPG. They definitely had a "we don't care if you stay" attitude.

They are as easy to port in & out as any other carrier.

    I left because:
    1) I had a super $15/month deal and they wanted to raise prices
    2) I used to roam internationally a lot, and their stipulation of submitting a massive deposit was bad enough until they increased it by an order of magnitude… And they were ambiguous about if I could have the balance refunded to my bank (not as credit)

In a nutshell - they are cheap. So expect cheap.

    • Fair call, I didn't mean a monthly ongoing discount, more some kind of cool trickery for the initial SIM purchase. Admittedly it's only $10 but I just wondered, this place is full of clever dudes who figure out cheap ways to get stuff.
(You know how it is here, buy this gift card here with AMEX bucks to buy TPG credits with this pricematch against your bla blah blah, in the end you pay -11$ per month for 500gb of datA)

      etc
Thanks for feedback. (FWIW, Telechoice is cheap and despite the Telstra network, I EXPECT cheap now, so sad) >:(

  • TPG's mobile telco division isn't focused on customer satisfaction — they kind of expect you to sort of know 'I'm getting what I'm paid for'

Anyway what about Jenee mobile? 18 dollar Pennywise plan gets you 300 mins calls, pretty much unlimited SMS and 1.8GB data, the only catch is no international calling. This plan should suit you if you meet the below criteria:

    • don't call much, but text a lot
    • use a lot of data
    • don't call overseas
    • I'm not too upset about customer satisfaction IF the network is reliable and automated billing works.
I thought Jenee was Optus? I won't go near Optus.
Also 300 minutes vs TPG which is ……. well……… I just don't know, I think it's a similar amount of minutes actually isn't it?

Check out vaya, they do dirt cheap plans

$18 a month for $650 of calls, 1.5 GB of Data and Unlimited SMS, also first month is free and free sim in January, and free delivery

    It's worth a shot

    • Isn't that Optus network?

      • it's a branch of Optus, so yes

In the words of most Aussies.
          Yeah, nah……

Sorry, nope, not Optus, no way

        • @hamwhisperer: I'm confused you want to go on TPG but not Vaya? They are both on the Optus network unless that has changed lately? I was with TPG then moved to Vaya as the customer service was well below average and their systems/apps/processes were ancient.

Vaya also does referrals. Think you both get a month free but maybe not when they are doing a promotion?!? I've moved to a contract with Virgin now but a few family members are still on Vaya. Vaya doesn't have excellent customer service but their systems and processes are much better than TPG.

Overall I was happy with them although my pet hate is that you can only login to your account with your account number which means absolutely nothing to you. Most telcos allow you to login using mobile or email which is logical.

        • @billybob1978: TPG recently switched to the Voda network.
I've heard consistent reports of issues with Optus the past 24 months, I've heard consistent reports that "Voda has got their @#% together and it's pretty decent" the past 12 months :/

          Simple as that TBH.

        • @hamwhisperer: Ah no kidding…damn didn't think companies could change providers like that. I guess it doesnt change how bad the customer service is at TPG though. I wouldn't if I was you but your call. Why don't you try Vaya as you get free delivery on SIM, first month free and if you don't like it you can transfer to a Vodafone provider. PS I was on Voda before I went to TPG and it was terrible. Yeah they might have improved things in the last 12 months but it would take a lot longer than that to have a network as good as Optus.

  • Vodafone's network is a bit dodgy in rural areas.

    • Yeah but Telechoices is a bit dodgy in Melbourne, seriously……..

      • Why not just roll with telstra themselves? Telstra have the best network — yes, you do pay more for that benefit but worth it

Their plans are actually pretty good nowadays.
$30 a month gets you the following prepaid usage

        Data inclusion
        Use anytime
        1.3GB

        Bonus Night Data
        To use between 8pm-8am AEST
        + 1.3GB Night Data

        $700 Call credit
plus unlimited calls to standard Telstra mobiles and Unlimited texts to standard Australian numbers

        $200 International Credit

Roll over your unused data, Call Credit and International Credit to use within your next recharge, or you can spend the credit on Google Play purchases

        Expiry: 28 days

        • I know it's only $10 a month but that's $120 a year, or $1200 a decade, maybe $1500 if you think of compound interest.
I'm a real pessimist on the job market and future prospects too. I used to make good coin, I don't now and I think tightening my belt as best I can is good.

If that was even $25 I'd consider the extra $5 a month but it ain't :/ (I barely use my phone, so $360 a year is a lot of coin to spend)

  • Finally got VF AYG 365 up today, to test possibly the strongest, budget / DIY Prepaid. Goal: large data 10.5G + backup 100 mins traditional voice.

Complex request .. However call centre rep activated starter pack ($30) plus added 2x $10 vouchers I had on hand: i.e $50 total credit. as well 350 mins VF-to-VF which I'll hardly touch.

Advised to wait 4 hours for plan to changeover from standard option- Combo account. Eventually confirmation texts come through.

365 arrives with no useful inclusion. Ensure Cellular data remains OFF until I send 'Data5' to 1264, toggle air plane mode get a base '0.5Gb on.
    'Talk5' for a 100 mins [optional for a HangoutsGV/Skype world plan user]

From here, 'dataday' - anecdotally will extend 2gb over 1.8days±: can be added, on demand, every few day for low def. vid streams and so on.
Android to alert, shuts off data say every 1.9Gb; preserving base 500mb.
    _
Tldr: This comes out $25 buys 100 mins +10.5gb pm, so i've ordered a few more $40packs tot. $38.40(phonebot) ending tonight
    If i transition to pure VoLTE this would last effectively 8 weeks ($20 pm) between activations/POPI .. 12.80 real cost/or 6.40mo =bargain.

    • I'm personally reluctant to switch to VOIP, I generally find it only just ok on a landline, let alone on a mobile.
While your post is kinda awesome with deals and dodgy ozbargain trickery, I'd rather stick to traditional stuff without too much hassle.
