  • What's the difference between raw honey and normal honey?

    • By normal honey I assume you mean store bought stuff like capilano? Just means it hasn't been pasteurized/heated, so will crystalize in time and need to be heated to go back into liquid

      • I always buy raw honey from my local shops here in Canberra, and eat it regularly (a couple of spoons a day). It will never crystallize that way and you make good use of it rather than simply decorating the kitchen cabinet.

My understanding is along the lines of - It still contains all the natural pollen, wax particles and other antiseptic/antibiotic components that is a normal component in honey, it hasn't been filtered and/or pasturised and hasn't has various sugars substituted to increase volume

      • There's one study that found that wounds healed faster when using honey but it's still not highly protective and it's only effective if you use honey externally on wounds. Won't have any actual effect by eating it. Plus, there's cheaper and more effective wound dressings available.

It's also illegal in Australia to add sugar/corn syrup/etc to honey unless you specifically state that it contains sugar/corn syrup. Companies still do it but if discovered they get fined heavily.

    • As far as health effects go, there's not much difference. Pasteurization slightly breaks down the enzymes but raw honey doesn't really have any health benefits. It could have the opposite depending on storage. Raw honey has a higher chance of yeast development and other bacteria. Honey doesn't develop a whole lot of bacteria due to its low water content but the bacteria it does develop can be highly dangerous to young, undeveloped, or inefficient immune systems.

The main thing with raw honey is the flavour. Raw honey has a slightly different taste to pasteurized honey.

If you do get it, just don't feed it to anyone who is immune deficient and store it in a cool place, preferably refrigerated.

          That's where the bees are;-)
I've ordered mine for free pickup.

It's rare that Brisbane ever gets free pickup in deals, unlike Sydney & Melbourne.

    • yep, I am out also. Will stick to my local shops that sell at about the same rate

    Sweet deal.

It could bee good if it sticks around.

  • Isn't it illegal to ship raw honey to Western Australia? I thought there was a law against it?

  • What about delivery? Is it 5kg for $50 delivered or you've to pay for the delivery?

    • $10.75 for delivery (via courier). Else if you pickup yourself, it's free.

      • Not that of a deal then. In that case I would rather keep an eye on those Coles/Woolies occasional discounts. Thanks

This deal isn't on usual store bought honey. Some of that is imported & not raw honey.

        • @Infidel: I know. But every now and then they have some raw honey sales.
