The ipad version is cheaper, but doesn't have the full feature set. The PC version is always the same cost I believe, at least I have not seen it discounted.
If your kids are under 10, I would say the ipad version is likely adequate. It is in the app store.

  • where do you get the PC version? please

  • the IOS version of Minecraft is easier to get into for kids. Once my kids became proficient they had a go at the Windows version (but then after a while the IOS version started to catchup again with features and they just stuck with that).

  • PE isn't far behind the full game now. My kids love it on their tablets.

  • Go for ipad version. See my cousin play it all the time. Can still build heaps and won't tie up the laptop for real work

  • Keep in mind that if it's a relatively old laptop (4 years or older, ish) Minecraft on PC will struggle, and push the computer very, very hard.

The portable and console versions are better optimized, to say the least. Plus I don't like all the crappy account and Microsoft shell that Microsoft has tied onto Minecraft to make it possible to play online on PC, but that's only a minor gripe. It's a game famous for mods and skins, the best of which are only on PC. (But I prefer to play games as they were intended anyway, so this is no problem for me.)
