  • do you have a desktop computer?

  • Any 2.5" external HDD can be used with a PS3, but most will need to be formatted to fat32 prior to use as they will likely come formatted in NTFS format.

    • to be used as the ps3's internal hdd
    • Here you go

      http://www.staticice.com.au/cgi-bin/search.cgi?q=2.5+sata+50…

i would check compatibility from sony although surfing the forums i found someone mentioned this

As long as it's SATA, and it's a 9.5mm high drive, it's fine (some older 2.5in SATA drives are 12.5mm thick and won't fit.)

not sure if its true or not

  • Hi,

I contacted msy.com.au (look for the local store in your area and call them) and they had a seagate 500g 2.5" for $100 and the other was $109….. Dirt cheap. Just ask the store rep what drive you can use (2.5" SATA notebook drive should be fine). Im also running a 1.5 tb external drive but make sure that if you use an external drive that is formatted fat32 prior to putting anything onto it or the ps3 won't recognize anything on it……

Before you do the internal HDD swap, Google search "changing ps3 hard drive" and you will find there is a heap of information on how to do it online …..5 minutes to swap the drive and about 1 hour to back up the info already on it then restore the info onto the new drive….youtube also has vidoe instructions if you are not confident with a screwdriver and fingernail haha.

Mine is the fat model but I did the same for my friend who had the slim model and it was a little bit more time consuming as you have to download the latest update onto a usb drive then once the new drive is in, put the usb drive into the ps3 and hey presto 500 gigs….. 1 hour's effort
