SYD - anyone know a good source to buy raw / unprocessed nuts?

I'm looking for almonds, Brazil nuts, walnuts, and macadamias in particular. I find it especially hard to find raw, unpasteurized almonds :(… those that I usually find don't specifically state that they are raw and/or unpasteurized.

So far, the lowest prices I've found (in terms of per kg) are:

almonds: $18 (Greener Grocer at Maroubra)
walnuts: $18 (Greener Grocer at Maroubra)
Brazil nuts: $21-22 (Hurstville)
macadmias: ~~$32 (Aldi)

  • raw / unprocessed nuts?

I've two but they are not for sale…

  • Have you tried a raw food specialty store?

I've been to a few (online and offline) but the prices invariably put me off :(…

  • Those prices you've already found sound pretty good. Might be the best you can get, unless you want to buy bigger quantities, bulk buy.

As per red-hot, those prices are pretty good. I did a bit of a bulk top up yesterday at a local place here in Perth and paid:

    Almonds (Australian) $19.99 per kg
    Macadamias $32.99 per kg
Walnuts (in shell) $17 per kg
    Brazil nuts $24 per kg

I find the price of Pistachios (roasted & salted) is actually cheaper at Coles than my local bulk joint. It's even better when Coles has them on special, which is hardly ever but worth keeping an eye out for.

    • thanks for the feedback! good to know the prices there, though I don't think I'll be going to Perth in the near future (though I heard many Singaporeans are there)

Try Harkola, Auburn. They alright imho. Price wise not too expensive nor cheap. Probably you can nogotiate if you buy big bulk.

There's also Nuts City (near Auburn). They're a wholesaler and a lot of the nuts stores including those at markets around the area source their nuts from them. Reasonable prices and great quality…very fresh!.

    • oh great!! Their prices look very reasonable! I'll go down there to check it out :), thanks so much! But their website doesn't look complete though: I can't sign up for their newsletter (404 Page Not Found), their /blog/news isn't created/updated yet, their About Us page isn't updated, and their Facebook link just directs me to facebook.com/shopify :(

Just to confirm, their address is 2/153-155 Orchardleigh St, Guildford NSW 2161, is that right?

      • Yes that is the correct address.

Agree, their website is a bit dodgy. It used to be a better/ more comprehensive website so I don't know why the new one is incomplete.

The shop is located in an industrial area and it's the last shop at the very back of the block. It may seem like you're in the wrong place on first impressions but there is a shop there!.

Also out of curiosity in your original post you mentioned Maroubra and Hurstville. Guildford is quite a drive so hats off to you if you're driving into the west as many people I know from that part of Sydney aren't bothered to come to Guildford area.

        • ohh got it, thanks for the tip :).

And yes, it is quite a distance :(, I'll reserve that trip for (Opal) Sundays.

They are open on weekdays only - closed on Saturday and Sunday.

        • @Macaron Mama: argh…. darn…. thanks for the heads-up, you saved me a wasted trip!
