Fine - Who Got It Right?

Hi ozbargain masters,

Just issued a fine for parking at a No Stopping sign. $248 fine (NSW).

Now the sign is a bit confusing, as I really thought that the no stopping sign is only for the Special Event time. Do I get it wrong? I got fined at 7pm.

What do you guys think? Should I appeal? Or just accept the fine and move on?

Thanks!

Joe

Might take a few seconds to read the signs, but nothing confusing about them.

    • Thanks Olokun. I guess I'll take it as a lesson and move on. :(

Sign says no stopping between 6pm and 6am. Which granted is unusual because its usually the other way around.

    • …for the special event. The special event is likely something that takes place at night. Other than those special event dates, the No Stopping requirement is as you describe.

Guess what? I got the exact same fine. We were five of us and we all thought that it was applicable only for the Special Event. And that was 20 days ago. They said there was clear instructions that's other signs are still applicable.

But I would say, appeal, it doesn't cost anything. The sign is very confusing and we were not the only one. You never know. And if they do cancel the fine let me know.

Did you appeal and that was their decision?

Yes I am totally with you. But if I (and five of you) got it wrong, then it was just an expensive lesson.

  • That sign is a damn disgrace. I bet the parking inspectors sweat on people parking there because of the confusion.
It would be nice to challenge it and win but chances of that are zero. They are making too much money out of it to rush into clearing it up.

I am not sure why it is confusing. The difference restrictions are segmented and difference colour schemes. You will only become confused if you start making assumptions instead of reading the signs as they are.

      • Each to their own… but surely that collection of signs could be tidied up … obviously they are making $'s from it as it is.

You have a point, but it's symptomatic of bureaucracy, rule layered upon rule. Safest assumption is a pessimistic one: the most restrictive situation is in force.

Whatever… you may be pro confusing signage.. I am for the side that says put a little effort into getting it right.

put a little effort into getting it right.

A worthy sentiment but good luck with that with bureaucracies. That's what I'm saying.

Some cities have put in place portals where citizens can report things not working, burst mains, potholes, traffic light outages. If only we were that progressive here (and not just re: public services).

        • Yellow sign was tacked on for a special event (NYE). You can see the supports on the sides.

Normal sign is the Parking Sign and No Stopping Sign.
Looks like they haven't gotten around to removing the special event signs yet.
But either way, all the signs were applicable.

I got done for parking in a no stopping zone in Melbourne on NYE afternoon.

It is normally 10-3pm parking, I parked in the morning and paid for my ticket until 3PM.
Around noon, they put up no parking signs and started ticketing cars as they were putting up the signs.

The council rejected this, until I showed them my dash cam footage clearly showing the inspectors ticketing people as contractors were putting up the signs.
Very sneaky as the signs should have gone up earlier in the morning and the day before. Can't just change whenever they feel like after people have parked and paid for it.

These signs are interesting though they would pose an issue of having to replace then entire sign if any of the restrictions change
