Suggestion for a cheap overseas holiday leaving from Sydney in July

Hi all,

I'm looking to go on a holiday overseas somewhere in July. Anyone have the best suggestions as to which country/city/destination(s) to go? I have a few criteria:

  • Flight not more than 12-14 hours (no minimum time)
  • Preferred budget for the return flight $600-700 (no minimum budget) for flights including baggage departing from Sydney. Can stop over in Melbourne/Gold coast/Perth/Singapore etc if required, multiple stops OK.
  • Not New Zealand, Japan, or anywhere in the Pacific (eg. Fiji)!
  • Prefer to leave Sydney in the first half of July (absolute earliest 30 june) and get back second half of July (absolute latest 2nd august)
  • Would rather total length be towards 4 weeks than two.
  • Would prefer if the climate in the destination is at least bearable (eg. not in a typhoon season or way too hot!)

Feel free to throw any suggestions of destinations at us even if you can't come up with the preferred price range. I dont mind hearing about a past trip! And if anyone else is in a similar position as me, feel free to let anyone know your preferences.

Finally, if anyone knows of any combination of flights that would get to (at bare minimum) an asian hub such as Singapore or Kuala Lumpur at a sub-$500 price within the criteria above, let us know!

  • This link might be a starting point:

…ironically the first few cheapest are all NZ/Japan/Pacific, but you can just skip past them.

  • Thats my problem - and i suppose part of the reason i decided to exclude them. Looked quite a bit at adioso but not getting sought-after results.

Maybe i should just narrow the question down to.. where's a good place to go that isn't one of those above places within 12-14 hours flight, in July?

I would prefer to backpack (of course, this is ozbargain!).

  • i was about to suggest KL. We always go there, we book 2-3 nights at the beginning and the end of the trip and boom off we go. We use the lonely planet and just find a place when we arrive :) . Cameron highlands, ipod, kk etc etc great cheap holiday…

  • I guess you can use any one of those adioso search results as a stop-over place. Obviously you usually need at least two flights to get to most international destinations.
