Replacement iPhone 5 Lightning Port

My iPhone 5 is no longer charging. Using a toothpick I got a few specs of lint out but still not charging. I think the dock connector is stuffed.

Has anyone got any experience with replacing the iPhone 5 Dock Connector or had it done in a store?

  • Our Mac has this problem and by cleaning the cable end and the port it worked again.

    Have you tried another cable?

Maybe take it to Apple shop for inspection, they will open it and if it is just dirt they might just clean it for you.

I have changed many batteries but cannot remember how the port is connected to the phone. Check YouTube :)

    • Hi and thanks for your reply. Yes, I tried cleaning the port but no success. Cables are not an issue because they successfully charge my son's iPad and iPhone. I'm considering wiping the port with a cotton bud and isopropal alcohol. If that doesn't work then I'll replace the port. Thanks - I'll try YouTube for some tips as well :)

  • Had similar with my iPhone 6. Took it into Apple Store and they had a quick look and cleaned it for me for nix.

    • I'll give this a shot. Thanks.

    • Did u had Apple Care or was it under warranty ? if not, how much they charged you ? i have a same problem with my phone.

      • My appointment isn't until Friday evening. I'll update you afterwards.

      • Mine was out of warranty and I never had AppleCare. Cost me nix.

        • Can i ask how ?

        • @ozyboy: Made an appointment. Explained issue I was having with charging. Guy used a magnifying glass to show me the crud then went out the back to clean it out and I was out of the store a few mins later.

People can poopoo Apple but their after sales service is exemplary.

        • @garglebutt: Good On you mate. I will try this weekend.

Took it to Apple today. The Genius Tech inspected the port and told me that it was clean and he could not see any obvious damage. He offered me the option of an out-of-warranty replacement (over $400) but I declined. Took it to one of those phone repair booths in the same shopping centre and got the port replaced for $50. Apple's after sales service is fantastic based on previous experience but in this case the generic phone repair booth was just a more viable option.

    • I will see if Cleaning will help other wise will go to replace the port from repair booth.
