Has anyone ported existing number to a new SIM, whilst keeping current plan under a new number?

Hi OzBargainers,

Just recently signed up for a new SIM card only plan with Optus (new number) and I want to port my current number (Virgin Mobile) over. However I would also like to keep the existing Virgin plan as well after I port it under a new number. Does anyone have any idea how I could go about with this?

  • Not possible sorry.once you port your old number I'm pretty sure it will terminate the contract.

    Nocure is correct.

    When you port your number while it is under an active contract, you will have terminated the contract and you will have to pay termination fees and any associated porting fees.

  • Sorry should have made it clear, the current contract has expired years ago, and I am on a month to month plan with Virgin… Perhaps I can get them to port over to a prepaid whilst they give me a new number for the postpaid? It'll then enable me to just port that prepaid over to Optus or no?

    • Still don't think it's possible. Once you port your current number to another service (Virgin or anyone else), you forfeit the current plan. You can't simply port another number to the same plan.

      With that said, why not just ring Virgin and ask?

  • Agree with everyone else saying it's not possible - but as iChopstick has suggested, just try call them and ask if there's any way they can help out? Maybe they'll find a way offer you that plan again if it's still available in their system (and if they love you enough?)

  • Thanks peeps, yeah couldn't get a hold of them today so thought I'd ask - their call centres were closed early today, and their chat service isn't available 24/7 (unlike Telstra/Optus).. Just a waste to give up on a $19pm plan that gives me roll overs with 2.5gb :(

    why not just get new number and keep old one, gathering you are doing this with wife or so… just tell people your new number especially your mistress

  • I have through both Optus and Telstra.. Although these were on business accounts, and I just dumped it on my account manager to work out.
