  • Available in iced blue, moss, white, pebble or coffee.
  • Superior quality!

From page 7 of this coming week/fortnight's Target catalogue.

Apparently 1000TC is the "real deal" for domestic bed linen.

We've bought 2 sets of 1000TC sheets in the last 18 months from online stores for around $90 each (QB - no colour choice), so this looks like an excellent price from a large retail chain + offering a range of colours.

Good deal. however TC has been used as a marketing ploy for a while now. Anything about 400 TC is generally considered pretty good. After that it's pretty meaningless as there are ways of upping the TC without improving the quality of the material. 1000 TC should last a while but don't necessarily expect it to feel satin smooth.

    • But TC would account to how many threads pass through a given space?
If that is the case the more threads, the more smooth it will be…

You can get crumby cotton, but the more threads the more smooth it will be, but still crumby cotton.

Yep there are lots of factors. Originally it was, and the high quality stuff still is, measured per square inch. But now you will often see it, in fine print, per 10 square centimeters.

        • Per sq inch is the US measure, per sq. cm the European measure, and per 10 sq. cm is the Australian standard. In rough terms, 200TC US = 80 TC Euro = 250 TC Australian.

But as others have said, TC is a flawed indicator of quality, for a whole bunch of reasons.

          • @MildMax: 80TC per sq cm (Euro) x 10 would seem a lot greater than 250TC (Aust 10 sq cm)

    • It depends on the weave. A 250 thread count square weave is about equal in quality to a 1000 thread count satin weave. The weave itself accounts has a factor of 4 in it.

But the softness, strength, durability and comes from the quality of the cotton, which is not an easy metric to quantify. The colourfastness and ease of care depends on the printing or dyeing and treatment processes.

It may come as a surprise, but often the label that best indicates the quality is the price. In other words, you get what you pay for.

You can be pretty sure your $80 sheets from Target will fall somewhere below "the ultimate" in luxury. It looks like a good reduction though.

Thread Count….clearly the 'contrast ratio' of the manchester world……

      • So we need to keep our eyes open for terms like "Dynamic Thread Count" from now on??? :)

  • I got Sheridan Supima Cotton bedsheets which are silky smooth… but only 400 thread count. The only thing the 1000 thread count versions seem to add is weight. Probably adds to the luxurious feel but 400 TC seems fine.

    • 400 TC square weave (percale) is a higher thread count that 1000 TC in satin weave. That's your difference.

I used to count sheep to go to sleep now I count threads ;-)

    • I counted mine last night.. 998!!! ;)

Here's a fairly detailed explanation of the whole thread count business:

    http://home.howstuffworks.com/home-improvement/decorating/th…

Be an educated bargain hunter!! :)

I personally find 1000 thread count sheets to be too heavy - feels like I'm sleeping under a curtain, so I stick to 400 TC. A friend of mine loves her 1000TC's though, so each to their own!!

    • Very interesting OrpDude…

These ones from Target are reputedly Woven with long stapled cotton in single ply yarn, so no tricky maths (counting individual plies) used here to inflate the thread count.

As you say, each to their own.

I don't rely on the flawed TC value. The best way is to touch and feel the product in store before you buy.

  • Purchased a set over 2 years ago in a sale. Very happy with them for the price we paid.

I thought I'd mention you get a $10 Target voucher if you spend over $100 during the first week of this sale.
