Further Discount on Optus Home Cable Plans

Hey guys,

I am just wondering whether any of you have experience getting further discount on the advertised cable prices from Optus. I am currently considering the $75 unlimited plan but trying to get a discount on the initial setup fee or a discounted speed pack. After chatting with one of the reps online, it seems that they are pretty firm on the offer.

What are your experiences?

Thanks.

Finally jumped on board with the $75 plan. No bonus speed pack but they waived off the $125 installation fee.

  • Been using the speed pack (100 Mbps/2 Mbps) for about 4 years now or whenever it was first introduced. I can't imagine my life without 100 Mbps download speed and I'm pretty sick of it, because my friends in Asia get 1 Gbps internet. I pay $90 a month with the speedpack if that helps.
I've been with Optus for 12 years.

    • Thanks dude, that's what I wanted too but the girl told me that absolutely no discount on speedpacks. Are you using their other services too? eg mobile plans etc?

      • Yes. I have an Optus plan bundled with the account.

Argh, that could be the reason. I mean I could live without 100M but for $15 I will go for it every time.

It's a shame you have to pay so much for such garbage speeds. That's what happens when Australians are more interested in hating muslims and neglecting refugees.
We could be living in a such a new world with Labor's NBN. IT's a pity that party reeks of union corruption, ridiculous spending habits and backroom deals.

    • Your post would have had some validity if you didn't put in a completely irrelevant racist tirade.

I have Optus Cable, I got it last year. I negotiated the speed pack for free on an unlimited bundle. I pay $90 a month. It is 100mbps, but its nowhere near as good as Telstra cable, the network is over capacity and often during peak times, my internet is very poor, youtube videos buffer and pings are terrible. The CG3000V2 modem is rubbish, especially the wifi component; I usually have to restart it once a day because if completely drops out. It also has zero QoS functionality, which is a real pain as I have at least 20 wifi and wired devices on my network. I'm going to need to bridge my cable modem, and Im just waiting on a good AC router to pop up here (need at least a dual core processor for QoS).

Hi Thorton, do you mind if I ask which suburb you are at? I am kind of worried about their peak performance as well. However, I am so far away from an exchange that cable is my only option. I am at Bayswater North btw.

I live in Armadale. A lot of people here have cable internet looking at the lines running to people's houses.

FYI: the speed pack on optus is only good for aus based sites
Non Aus sites are limited to the standard 30mbs

speedtest with a non aus based server will show the speeds

    • dang, thanks for the reminder man. I totally forgot about this.

Hi MadMax. I live in Wantirna and moved to Optus last year from Telstra when they got this special deal.

Along with the deal, Thanks to OzB members for tips, I was able to get

    Free upgrade to 100Mbps speed.
    Free CallerID for Landline
Free Call Waiting, forwarding and Voicemail for landline
    3 months NetFlix Coupons

The advertised package for $89.99 already included

    Unlimited broadband
Free landline with unlimited local calls including mobiles and 30+ international countries.
    Free Installation and cable modem
    Free FetchTV box
Free Standard package and Entertainment Pack

    I also paid extra for

Netgear powerline LAN extender for $40 (Market cost around $100)
Bought a landline phone from JB-HIFI

Hope this helps. Certainly you can negotiate from Optus. It also depends on what ISP you are relocating from and competition around. I see few Optus reps on OzB. have a fair go with them. No harm in negotiating.

    Good luck mate

    • Wow, thanks mate. You got such an awesome deal there. How's your peak hour speed btw?

      • +2

Well the speed is ok. Mostly we watch FetchTV thats IP TV and it runs fine.
No issues with Netflix or Youtube. Local ISP speed test reaches 70 75 Mbps.

        • Yeah I got fetch tv too but I never use it. It's not the peak speeds that are the issue, it's network congestion during peak times

    • How do the netflix coupons get delivered? My father signed up recently (he's not tech savvy), and has no idea where to get the coupons?

  • Slightly related… I was in the Optus store on the weekend when I asked about their NBN bundle plans (Unlimited NBN, landline, Fetch TV etc) - the Store rep told me to hold off until Feb 1 when there would be much better changes to the plan. He said it was a secret.

Maybe wait a few more days and see if all their plans are revamped?

    • Will do, hopefully that applies to cable plans too :)

  • Also tried my very best to get a discount or free adaptors but couldn't when I signed up for nbn :( They have only charged me for the entertainment pack so far though… not sure when they're going to start billing me for the actual service (2 months after service).

  • best to check on this forum if your postcode popped up anywhere .. i am on optus cable

avg download speed is 1mbps, fetchtv stalls most nights - "congestion that will be fixed in the future"

  • Are there any deals WITHOUT fetch?

  • "Finally jumped on board with the $75 plan. No bonus speed pack but they waived off the $125 installation fee."

Just chatted with Optus sales online. They are pretty firm on not waiving the start up fee of $125 for the $75 unlimited cable plan. What did you do to get it waived?

Don't use chat. My guess is that the chat centre is outsourced and the lady that I initially chatted with was only interested in selling me a mobile plan. Freaking pissed me off.

I ended up ringing up their call centre which I talked to an Aussie lady. She refused to give me the free Speed Pack but were quite easy on waiving installation. You can just call up and say one of your friends got this plan and got offered free installation. Pretty sure they will give it to you.

      • just tried, wasn't an aussie but they were pretty firm on not waiving installation!
